As water temperatures begin to increase in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s a good time for a reminder of how heat impacts coral bleaching.

Healthy corals share a symbiotic relationship with microscopic algae called zooxanthellae. These algae live within the coral’s tissues, providing their primary food source and their color.

When the surrounding water stays too warm for too long, corals become stressed and expel their algae. This leaves the coral tissue translucent, making the white skeleton visible underneath. This stark white appearance is why we call it coral bleaching, as corals look bleached of color.

Corals can survive bleaching events, but it leaves them under stress and more susceptible to mortality.
