Pufferfish Facts

Pufferfish are incredible, highly toxic marine animals renowned for their ability to inflate into balloon-like shapes and their fused, beak-like teeth. Beyond their famous defense mechanisms, these clumsy yet agile swimmers are also known to craft geometric sand masterpieces and harbor a surprisingly dark side.

Discover these fascinating facts about these iconic creatures:
* They are deadly toxic: Pufferfish carry tetrodotoxin, a lethal neurotoxin up to 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide. One fish carries enough poison to kill 30 adult humans, and there is no known antidote.
* They don’t have eyelids, but they can blink: Pufferfish are unique among bony fish because they can blink. They retract their eyeballs deep into their sockets (up to 70% of the eye’s diameter) and squeeze their surrounding skin closed.
* They have continuous “teeth”: Pufferfish belong to the family Tetraodontidae, which means “four teeth.” These four teeth are fused into a strong, beak-like structure that never stops growing, allowing them to continuously crunch through hard-shelled crabs, clams, and mussels.
* Dolphins use them to “get high”: Marine biologists have documented dolphins gently passing a pufferfish around in a circle for 20-30 minutes, engaging in a behavioral phenomenon that appears to leave the dolphins in a trance-like state.
* They can inflate up to 4 times their size: To evade predators, they rapidly swallow huge amounts of water (and occasionally air) to blow themselves up, making them a spiny, hard-to-swallow ball.
* Baby puffers can be cannibals: Tiger pufferfish larvae are highly aggressive; once they grow their first teeth, they will bite lumps out of their own siblings who haven’t yet developed them.
