We build them into the fundamentals. 🗣️

“BACK UP! GET AWAY!”

Repeating a clear command can serve several purposes during a stressful situation: it helps reinforce breath control, may encourage compliance, and clearly communicates to everyone around you that you are trying to create distance and de-escalate the situation.

It also gives witnesses something important to hear: who is giving commands, what they’re saying, and what they’re asking the other person to do.

This footage comes from one of our Shot Tec training clients. We believe marksmanship training shouldn’t exist in a vacuum — communication is part of the fundamentals, too.

**CUSTOMER STATES:** “It just needs to be cleaned.”

Remember this P365? 👀

We pulled the guide rod and recoil spring, and there's so much rust that the assembly is **binding up.**

Could it potentially be cleaned up? Yes.

But that's not the only question we ask.

When a component has this much corrosion and is already binding, our recommendation is to **replace the guide rod and spring** rather than put a heavily corroded, compromised component back into service.

Sometimes the question isn't **“Can we clean it?”**

It's **“Should we put it back in?”**

That's the difference between simply cleaning a fi***rm and actually inspecting it.

Remember, its $65 for us to clean a gun BUT just $50 for us to show you how to do it for life! Why? Because we want responsible gun owners out there.

Grandma taught him to use his right hand from an early age—and he never questioned it. But there was one thing she couldn't change: his dominant eye. 👁️

This is an “aha!” moment we see with clients at Shot Tec.

Being right-handed doesn't automatically mean you're right-eye dominant. For a right-handed, left-eye-dominant shooter, understanding how to bring the fi***rm to the dominant eye—while crossing the midline and maintaining a neutral neck and spine—can make a significant difference in learning the fundamentals of marksmanship.

This is one reason we use **simulation technology in our personal training**. Students can slow the process down, identify what's happening, and clinic the fundamentals before adding live fire.

We aren't interested in forcing every shooter into the same mold. We want to understand the individual and help them build the skills that work for them.

If you're a fi***rm owner, that's a situation worth thinking about **before it ever happens**.

A break-in can give an unauthorized person access to anything inside your home—including fi***rms that aren't properly secured.

Responsible fi***rm ownership means asking yourself:

📋 Do I have an accurate record of what fi***rms I own?
🧠 Is fi***rm security part of my overall home security plan?

At Shot Tec, we believe preparation means thinking about problems **before** they happen.

You don't buy a fire extinguisher after the fire starts and you don't wait to mount it so its where you need it when you need it.

You don't create an emergency plan after the emergency begins.

And you shouldn't wait until after a break-in to think about securing your fi***rms.

⚠️ **PART 1.5: If we didnt do this backwards, it would be ILLEGAL and the PA Game Warden is no joke.**

Why I'm sharing? Because we teach how to seek guidance and be on the right side of the law. Lately its been about suppressors. Normally its about USE OF FORCE. Now... its a FOX. Yes, we're in the suburbs but we are still with wildlife.

After finding a dead red fox behind our cars, I called the Pennsylvania Game Commission to find out if I could preserve the pelt and skeleton for educational use.

The receptionist explained that the local Game Warden would need to get involved and give permission FIRST but “He’s busy with more serious calls.”

I get it BUT here's the problem with waiting: 🕐 The fox was on a clock.

It was already beginning to deteriorate, and scavengers could take it apart at any time.

Here's the counterintuitive part and where many get in big trouble: You CANNOT process and preserve the fox and then ask for permission retroactively.

Process/ preserve and then get permission while seemingly reasonable puts you on the wrong side of Pennsylvania wildlife laws. Getting it wrong can mean fines, seizure of the wildlife, and potentially loss or revocation of hunting privileges, and even CHARGES. They can take property used in "commission of the crime" and that can mean fi***rms and vehicles!

So I'm sitting there with a fox that's getting closer to being unusable, knowing that doing nothing could mean losing the opportunity—but doing the obvious thing could mean creating a legal problem.

This is exactly why I'm sharing this series.

At Shot Tec, we teach people to stay legal, practical, and tactical.

That means knowing when you DON'T know the answer, contacting the appropriate authority, explaining the situation, and getting proper guidance before you act.

Usually we're talking about fi***rms.

This time, we're talking about wildlife.

And sometimes being practical means knowing when the answer is:

“Wait.”

So I waited.

🦊 **We found a dead red fox in our parking lot… and suddenly needed wildlife-law guidance.**

Why am I sharing this story? Because we TEACH how to stay legal, practical, and tactical... which includes how to navigate the legal/ law enforcement landscape which often includes SEEKING GUIDANCE. Lately its been for suppressors. Most often its for USE OF FORCE. In this case, it was for WILDLIFE.

Here's the story:
When we closed up Shot Tec, there it was behind our cars. I wasn't sure if it was still alive or potentially rabid, so I grabbed some pepper spray before approaching it. Thankfully, it had already passed.

It was a beautiful animal, and it seemed like a shame to simply throw away the fur and skeleton when they could potentially be useful as educational and training aids… or a hat for the Mrs. 😂

So I called the Pennsylvania Game Commission's general number in Harrisburg.

If you're unfamiliar with Pennsylvania wildlife law, some of this may surprise you. Pennsylvania Game Wardens are law enforcement officers, and wildlife laws come with real requirements and penalties. This isn't an area where you want to make assumptions or rely on what somebody's neighbor told them 20 years ago.

The Game Commission receptionist was incredibly helpful (and surprisingly patient with my jokes 😂). She explained that simply disposing of the fox is free, but legally harvesting the pelt and skeleton is a different matter. The local game warden needs to give permission before proceeding, and there are costs involved.

But there's a ticking clock. 🕐

The fox couldn't sit in our parking lot indefinitely. Nature was already starting its work, and I needed to figure out what I could legally do before it deteriorated or was scavenged.

That's one of the things we emphasize and teach at Shot Tec: **stay legal, stay practical, and stay tactical.**

Usually we're talking about fi***rms and personal safety. This time, we're talking about a dead fox in a parking lot. 😂

Wildlife doesn't stop at the edge of the suburbs. We share these spaces with some incredible animals, and sometimes living alongside them means knowing what to do when something unexpected happens.

Yes, that is an angle grinder. 😂

No, that is NOT how we’re cutting down the barrel.

We’re pre-cutting the damaged portion so the good section will fit in the ultrasonic cleaner while we’re building this SBS.

Sometimes the shop process looks a little ridiculous before it looks like a finished fi***rm.

The proper barrel work comes later. 🛠️

**CUSTOMER STATES:** “I just want my P365 cleaned… but I think something else is going on.”

They weren't wrong. 😬

This SIG Sauer P365 came in for what was supposed to be a routine cleaning, but once we started looking it over, it was clear there was **a lot more going on than just dirt and fouling.**

It's $50 to learn to clean but $65 if we clean it because we want everyone to know how to clean their guns.

When a customer tells us their fi***rm isn't behaving the way it should, we don't want to simply clean it and send it back. We want to understand **why.**

Sometimes a cleaning is all it needs. Sometimes it's the starting point for finding a much bigger problem.

**Why do people yawn at the gun range? 🥱🎯**

It might not be because they're tired.

They may be **holding their breath.**

Here's something that surprises a lot of shooters: **breath control for r***e shooting and handgun shooting isn't necessarily the same.** Techniques used for precision r***e shooting can create habits that don't translate well to defensive or practical handgun shooting.

The bigger problem? Even people who *know* they should be breathing can unconsciously hold their breath when they start concentrating.

They're thinking about their grip.
Their sights.
Their trigger press.
Their next shot.

And without realizing it...

**They're no longer breathing.**

Bad things can happen when you hold your breath, especially when your body is already dealing with the physical effects of concentration and stress.

That's why at **Shot Tec**, we don't believe that simply telling someone, *"Remember to breathe,"* is enough.

We use **experiential learning** to help students recognize what their own bodies are doing while they shoot. Then we build better habits through **proper form, repetition, and practical exercises.**

Because when you're concentrating—or eventually dealing with pressure—you don't want to depend on remembering a long list of instructions.

You want good habits to already be there.

Sometimes something as simple as a yawn 🥱 is your body telling you that it's time to pay attention to your breathing.
