From the Master Ip Man himself!

I respect this martial artist. I say this before I share what I want to say because he is pretty good and appears to be a good teacher.
The danger of posting videos of applications is 1.) some inexperienced practitioners think, “ Oh, If someone throws a punch at me I can do this technique to defend myself.” While (2.) others who are experienced in fighting or defending themselves say, that would never work in the ring (or on the street).”
You should never force an application. If you find your self where your hands are touching those precise locations on the arm by happenstance, then you could apply the technique. But if someone throws a punch and it’s a little off from what you have trained and don’t catch it right, it won’t work and you will be untroubled.
My point being that if you watch a video showing application, take it only at face value do not assume that it will or won’t work. You need to work with a real teacher and develop sensitivity as to what does and doesn’t work, with real pressure from a training opponent. Only then will you start to grasp what will or won’t work in the ring or on the street.

My teacher taught me this (ok, not the jumping part). Many people come to class with preconceived ideas about martial arts. And, when they really start to get into it, they understand that it is a new way of thinking and moving. They have to learn to let go, which helps…. Free your mind.

For me, there is such a uniformity between my spiritual walk and my martial arts training that each component -body, mind, soul, and spirit; & fellowship-that it helps harmonize my life. It’s amazing. Thanks to my teacher, Carl Dechiara for helping me realize this. Thank you, God, for bringing him into my life to be a mentor to me!

I don’t know who this guy is nor do I endorse him, but this is correct. We also say - along similar lines - (from the US Navy) - Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. To cultivate oneself through a martial arts form, it must be done slowly. As one continues to work through the form and intentionally integrates the whole body with correct structure the body, mind, soul and spirit benefit from the training. And consistently training over a long period of time one develops “kung fu”.

Bruce Lee - "Like a finger pointing to the moon" 06/21/2026

I have used this illustration so many times. Many people, especially beginners only “look at the finger” because the don’t know what the finger is pointing towards because they are so enthralled with “the finger”. They are missing so much, “all that heavenly beauty”.

Martial arts not only helps you train for self defense, but acts as personal growth. Carl once said,”Precision helps you focus.” I had written that on our mirror as a reminder. This applies not only to martial arts, but to all of life. Aiming to have better and better precision helps you focus on improvement by chasing precision/perfection and by chasing perfection you catch excellence. What could you do to improve your body, mind, soul and spirit? What would improving your focus do for you and those around you. Our students work and train to be precise on a regular basis which spills into their everyday lives. What would you do with greater focus?
