The morning started early, cool and breezy. It was our 5th day. We set out to chase Zebras and I bet we walked 5 miles uphill and down trying to get close. We were on a group and the feeling was there. It was finally going to come to fruition. We stalked closer and closer until we heard the sound of a helicopter coming close to the area we were hunting. In an instant the Zebras were gone. Vanished. After the hike back to the truck I was defeated. I had given up on my goal to harvest a Zebra, thinking to myself it was me.
After lunch and a self pitty nap. We set back out to see what we could find. Matt and the trackers spotted a group of around 7-9 Zebras off in the distance. A flame rekindled quickly when he said let’s get out of the truck and chase them. After a 15 minute stalk and a very close encounter with a Puff Adder Viper, Matt sat the sticks down. It was go time. We were close enough to take an ethical shot. He told me which one was a mature Stallion and I got dialed in on him. I squeezed the trigger and watched him go about 5 yards and fall. I had done it. After chasing them morning and night, practically giving up. I had sealed the deal. I gave Matt the biggest hug and may have shed a tear or two. In that moment the plains of Africa feel silent in my ears.
After walking up to the magnificent animal and truly seeing how beautiful they are. It was a feeling like no other. Henry Sells patted me on the back and said “well you finally got your Zebra” I was still in disbelief although it was there right in front of me.
Pictures don’t do this Zebra justice. Here are a few that stood out to me. I owe it all to The Big Man Upstairs and Matt. The Lord truly blessed me and this is a moment I will hold near and dear forever.
