Hi everyone!

This post goes out to the new paddlers out there - and maybe some not-so new paddlers who need to hear this.

Remember that NC law says that all vessels have to have a Type III PFD (personal flotation device) for each person on said vessel, and the PFD must be worn while underway by all persons 12 years of age and under. (Except for large commercial vessels like ferries, but that’s not what we’re talking about here)

And paddle boards ARE vessels, so make sure you’ve got that PFD aboard.

The best place for the PFD while paddling is on your body, fitted properly so you’ll float if you go in the water, but again you merely have to have it on the vessel to comply with regulations.

Don’t want to wear a bulky PFD, especially when using a SUP? They make belts with CO2 inflation should you dump and need flotation.

Like a bike helmet or a seat belt, you may not think you’ll need it… until you need it.

I have gently reminded people I see at launch sites with no PFD’s that they risk a fine for not having one on board, and often they were merely ignorant of the rules, not intentionally breaking them. As a professional I feel obliged to let people know the rules, not just to avoid potential fines, but also to avoid something worse.

Stay safe out there! Help out newbies when you can, because no matter how much time we have clocked on the water, we’ve all been new at this at some point.
