Come to Blue Grotto and you will experience first hand what Jacques Cousteau himself discovered about diving the Florida Springs. Blue Grotto in Williston is home to the largest accessible underwater cavern in north-central Florida. Sport divers can reach depths of 60 feet while still keeping the entrance clearly in sight. It's one of just four sites in the region where you only need an Open Water Diver certification to experience a safe, enjoyable cavern dive. Visibility often exceeds 100 feet. Additional features include:

EVERYBODY KNOWS VIRGIL…

…but he’s just one of five turtles you may encounter at Blue Grotto. Here is the complete list:

VIRGIL: When this Florida Softshell Turtle outgrew his aquarium in 1997, he found a new home at Blue Grotto. Virgil has always been comfortable around people, which is why he comes up to everybody. Feed him his favorite snack and he’ll be your friend for life.

YERTLE (THE TURTLE): Named after the Dr. Seuss character, Yertle is another softshell turtle, similar in size and appearance to Virgil. We believe he wandered over from next door in search of food when their pond dried up. Being a wild turtle, he disappears whenever divers enter the water. But if you look down from above before anyone gets in, you will often see Yertle and Virgil playing together like best buds.

SYLVIA: Like Yertle, it appears this Yellow-Bellied Slider wandered over from next door. Sylvia is big — nearly twice the size of Virgil. Despite being wild, she has been known to swim to within a few feet of divers just to check them out.

JESSE and SAMMY: Like Virgil, these two Yellow Sliders came to the Grotto after outgrowing their aquarium. Jesse is a little more than half the size of Virgil. Sammy, being a male, is smaller in size, despite being the same age as Jesse.

■ At most dive sites, the fish keep their distance. Getting within arm’s reach is almost impossible.

■ But at Blue Grotto, it’s a different story. Our friendly bluegills will swim right up to you — especially if you offer them their favorite treats.

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR...

For the past several months, we've been hoping for enough rain to end the drought and restore Blue Grotto's water level. Yesterday afternoon, we got exactly what we asked for. The skies opened up, and it poured for more than two hours.

When we checked the water afterward, the Grotto had turned into one giant mud puddle. Not just poor visibility—no visibility.

The last time this happened, Blue Grotto was forced to close for several weeks. Fortunately, this time was different.

The heavy rain also brought a dramatic increase in groundwater flow, flushing out most of the sediment overnight.

Conditions aren't quite back to normal yet, but they're improving rapidly. The good news is that Blue Grotto will be open this weekend after all.
