🤔 THINK ABOUT IT THURSDAY: SATURDAY DEBRIEF
🚗 YOU DON'T HAVE TO WIN THE ARGUMENT. YOU HAVE TO WIN THE OUTCOME.
Thursday, we asked what you would do if another driver became aggressive, started following you, or displayed a weapon.
Today, let's talk about getting home safely.
🚨 1. DON'T ENGAGE.
Avoid eye contact meant to challenge, angry gestures, yelling, brake-checking or retaliating. Let them pass when it's safe. Your ego isn't worth your life.
🚗 2. CREATE DISTANCE.
Don't race, chase or attempt dangerous maneuvers. Maintain control of your vehicle, obey traffic laws and create distance when it's safe.
🏠 3. NEVER LEAD THEM HOME.
If someone is following you, don't drive home or to another private location. Keep your doors locked and windows up. Head toward a police station or another populated, well-lit location where help is available, and follow dispatcher's directions.
📞 4. CALL 911.
If you're being threatened, followed aggressively or someone displays a weapon, call 911 when it's safe. Use hands-free calling if available, or have a passenger call. Give dispatch your location, direction of travel, vehicle description and details of the threat.
⚠️ 5. IF A WEAPON APPEARS, EVERYTHING CHANGES.
Don't challenge, pursue or confront the other driver. Prioritize creating distance and getting help. If you're legally carrying a fi***rm yourself, don't display it to answer a threat or intimidate someone.
👨👩👧 6. PROTECT YOUR PASSENGERS.
Keep everyone inside the vehicle, doors locked and seat belts fastened. Have a passenger call for help if possible. Avoid stopping to confront anyone.
Remember, getting a license plate number is helpful, but never put yourself in greater danger trying to obtain it.
These safety recommendations are consistent with guidance from AAA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
❤️ THIS WEEK'S CHALLENGE: Talk with your family, especially your teenage drivers, about what to do if someone follows or threatens them on the road. Identify a safe destination and discuss how to contact emergency services.
Getting home safely matters more than being right.
🧠 Awareness gives you options. Options give you time. Time can save your life.
