One of the best parts of youth work is watching a familiar story open the door to a bigger conversation.

This week, ICT Launchpad students at Mueller used the Scarecrow from The Wiz to explore a simple idea: sometimes ability is already there before confidence catches up.

After the discussion, the students created their own scarecrow drawings. The artwork made the lesson visible — different styles, different ideas, same message: growth starts when young people have space to try, create, and believe in what they can do.

Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Cocca for helping support that kind of space.

And the lesson is about to get life-sized: at BOOtanica, our youth will help decorate a life-sized scarecrow for Botanica’s Scarecrow Row Competition.

Something special is growing at Mueller. 🚀

ICT Launchpad is entering our fourth year working with Mueller students, and these photos capture what this work is really about: young people practicing leadership—not just hearing about it.

Most Tuesdays during the school year, our sessions bring together leadership, teamwork, healthy choices, writing, creativity and hands-on learning. Last year, students became healthy-food critics. This year, we're expanding into digital storytelling and creation with microphones, tablets, video and other tools that help students see themselves as leaders, creators and problem-solvers.

The circle around Mueller is growing too. In our latest collaboration meeting, Mueller, Wichita Public Schools Foundation, Wichita State Connect, the Greater Wichita YMCA, Airbus, and Boeing in Wichita explored ways to connect students and families with STEM, campus experiences, financial literacy, mentoring, enrichment and stronger support for teachers and families.

The goal isn't to simply tell children what they can become. It's to give them exposure, experiences, relationships and access that expand what they believe is possible.

When schools, nonprofits, businesses, universities, families and neighbors work together, we build an ecosystem around our children.

On the final day of Leadership at Mueller, each student walked away with a symbolic Launchpad Leadership Survival Kit — a small bag filled with reminders of the lessons we worked on throughout the school year.

Each item represented a leadership principle: self-discipline, teamwork, confidence, kindness, healthy choices, emotional control, preparation, and the courage to keep growing.

Our hope is that the seeds planted and watered this year will continue to produce fruit in the lives of these students for years to come.

This work would not be possible without the continued support of Tawyna Glover and Jason Fair. Their care, commitment, and belief in the youth at Mueller are truly appreciated.

ICT Launchpad is grateful for the opportunity to pour into the next generation of leaders.

This year’s Mueller Aerospace Leadership Group focused on helping students connect leadership with daily choices — including healthy eating, teamwork, self-discipline, and confidence.

Through ICT Launchpad, our goal is to expose youth to tools, conversations, and experiences that help them grow into stronger leaders inside and outside the classroom.
