This week is going to be another exceptionally hot week in the midwest. The miles are getting high and you'll need to be smart. Check out this week's pro tip from local running coach, Nancy Rusanowsky.

Peak weeks are tough enough without Wichita’s summer heat! Don’t chase your normal pace when the temps and humidity are high—run by effort, slow down when you need to, hydrate, and get those long runs started early in the day. The goal right now is to build fitness, not prove fitness. Cooler race-day temps will make all these hot-weather miles worth it!

🫪 Gulp!

How are you feeling?

Some great tips as we head into more long runs this weekend.
Thanks to Madi Osburn from Flexible Nutrition LLC about proper run hydration.

A general range for fluid and sodium intake during long runs in the heat is ~13-24 oz fluid/hour and 300-600mg sodium/hr. If you are a heavy sweater, aim for the higher end of these ranges. If you are not a very heavy sweater, aim for the lower ends of these ranges. Like I said, now is the ideal time to practice and see what helps you feel and perform your best.
*Remember - you can (sometimes) "get away" with not hydrating/fueling optimally during long run training, but think about how depleted you can feel after for the rest of the day (or days). If you want to train well AND feel good AND recover well afterward, prioritize hydration and fueling during long training runs.

The miles are long and the weather is hot. Please hear from our expert from Select Physical Therapy about the best way to stay healthy during these weeks of training.

"As a Physical Therapist, my biggest tips for running in the heat are listen to your body and adjust your pace. Extreme heat can decrease blood flow and fluid levels in your body, which are crucial to your muscles. Your normal pace may feel much harder in high temperatures. Stay hydrated (before, during and after runs), run during cooler parts of the day when possible, and don't push through dizziness, nausea, headaches, cramps or unusual weakness. In the heat, focus on effort, not your pace."

Check out this old flyer about our marathon! Before we were called Prairie Fire, we were The KAKE TV Wichita Marathon. The fastest time in our race in history was ran in 1982. Fred Torneden ran 26.2 miles in 2:18:08!
That male record still stands as the fastest race record and the fastest state record.

ANYONE COMING TO BREAK THAT?
