HYROX vs. CrossFit: are they really the same thing? πŸ€”

Short answer: no. CrossFit is built on variety β€” workouts change daily, almost any movement is fair game. HYROX is built on repetition β€” the same 8km run, the same 8 stations, same order, every race. Different formats, but the same underlying truth: strength and cardio working together in an integrated fashion.

SUPER proud of all Viking Athletes who competed this weekend!

Steven Meis is once again a WORLD CHAMPION, taking gold in his division in Athens.

Rafael Martinez and Brian Searls, aka team Bruised and Battered, took first in their division at the Tolland Classic.

And Ty Losure and Aaron Celken, aka team Vikings on Parade, made it to the finals at the Tolland Classic.

Great work, everyone!

The SAID principle stands for Specific Adaption to Imposed Demands. Generally, we apply this to movement selection - strength training to build strength, performing long bouts of cardio to build endurance, etc.

For athletic performance, we want to apply it more broadly. Exercise ORDER matters too. Traditional strength and conditioning philosophy would have you sprint early in a session to build speed, because it's neurologically demanding. Yet many sports teams sprint at the end of practice. Why? To practice producing power under fatigue. To make sure you have power in reserve for the 4th quarter.

Since the Boston HYROX is coming up, this means performing wallballs and running when your legs are fatigued, not just practicing them when you're fresh.

We can also apply SAID to environmental factors. Temperature, time of day, the food you've eaten that day - if it's new to you on race day, it can impact performance, for better or worse.

The point is, for solid athletic performance, consider these variables, and control what you can for consistency's sake.

The sled push and sled pull are the two stations that separate HYROX high performers from the rest of the pack, and in a humbling fashion.

Everything else in the race rewards pacing and muscular endurance. The sled stations reward one thing: sustained output of force. If you slow down too much, you stop.

This is tough enough on its own. To make matters more difficulty, official HYROX turf isn't like the turf most gyms have, or the hard asphalt outside. It's softer β€” the sled sinks in, and every push costs more energy. Most athletes don't feel that difference until race day, when it's too late to adjust.

We didn't want our athletes finding that out on the clock. That's why Viking Athletics has official HYROX turf on-site β€” so you build sled strength under the exact conditions of race day.

Not training for HYROX? Sled work is still a great tool for general physical preparedness (GPP). This is the base everything else is built upon - strength, conditioning, and work capacity.

A collection of random workouts does not a program make. And complexes thrown in to make you tired do not serve a purpose.

At Viking Athletics, every movement, every workout, is a building block in a bigger picture, designed to help you improve. Nothing is random, and the purpose is never simply "to make you tired."

Ask questions. You should be able to justify every movement in your program. If you can't it shouldn't be there.

Social hour at the bar!

When it's time to do work, we work. HARD.

But hard work (and its results) and fun are not mutually exclusive.

People join for the training. It's the community that keeps them coming back.

Everyone has a place here. If you're ready to claim yours, book a free intro using the link in our bio and let's chat!

Running fresh and running fatigued are NOT the same skill. πŸƒβ™‚οΈπŸ’₯

Most training plans separate lifting and running β€” great for general fitness, but not when you're racing an integrated event like HYROX. That's exactly why strong, fit athletes can still fall apart running on dead legs.

The fix: train the transition, not just the pieces.
