One of the biggest goals during survival swim lessons is building correct muscle memory through consistent repetition.

When children go back to floaties or other flotation aids, they’re often practicing a completely different body position and movement pattern. That means they’re rehearsing skills that don’t match what they’ve worked so hard to learn during lessons. We want them to trust their own skills—with close adult supervision always within arm’s reach.

The more they practice the right movements, the stronger those life-saving responses become.

I decided to start a new series highlighting some of our swimmers, their “why’s”, and their progress! I hope sharing these stories makes these lessons feel personal because Survival Swim Rays wants nothing more than to make you feel like part of our family 🩵

Meet Jax! 💙

Jax is one of our amazing Survival Swim Rays, and we’re honored to be part of his unique journey in the water. As a child on the autism spectrum with Level 3 support needs, Jax learns and experiences the world in his own special way.

Many children on the autism spectrum are naturally drawn to water, which makes water safety education especially important. For families, learning how to safely navigate the water isn’t just another skill — it can be a critical layer of protection.

At Survival Swim Rays, we believe every child is capable of learning life-saving water safety skills. We also believe every child deserves to be taught in a way that honors how they learn, communicate, and experience the world.

For Jax, that means building trust, confidence, body awareness, and essential survival skills while meeting him where he is and celebrating every step forward.

We celebrate the big milestones, but we also celebrate the little moments — showing up, trying something new, building trust, and discovering what he is capable of 🩵
