Hey MPIIers! Today is Bastille Day, or French National Day, which commemorates the critical turning point in the French Revolution. Our key ally in the Revolutionary War, France was in an ugly internal conflict by 1789. On July 14th, citizens, rebels, and several mutinous members of the French Guard stormed the Bastille – which was a fortress/prison. They freed the political prisoners held there and acquired the stored weapons and gunpowder. This success led to the official end of feudalism in France by August 4th. By the end of August, France had proclaimed their pivotal document: The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, which would serve as the preamble to the French Constitution two years later.

Hey MPIIers! Today is Independence Day. Today all Americans unite to celebrate the birth of our great nation – the anniversary of our Declaration of Independence. Although the Second Continental Congress created our new nation on July 2nd, 1776, it took an additional two days to settle on the wording of and formally approve the Declaration of Independence. The first 4th of July fireworks display took place on the one-year anniversary (1777) in Philadelphia. Happy 250th birthday to the U.S.A.!

Hey MPIIers! First off, please have a fantastic holiday weekend this weekend as we celebrate the U.S.A.'s 250th anniversary! Please be smart and safe also!

With the holiday hitting on Saturday, many businesses are closed on Friday the 3rd for Observed Independence Day. However, the Clubhouse will be open with normal hours.

Also, for all those villages with curbside service from Coastal, they WILL be making their regularly scheduled trash pickups this Friday.

Again, have a fantastic, but safe, 4th of July!

Hey MPIIers! Important reminder from the county…

recycles a lot — but some items just can’t go in the blue bin. Keep these out:

♻️ Glass: No market for it, and it breaks easily, contaminating other materials
🧃 Juice & milk cartons: Made from non recyclable composite layers
💦 Anything wet or dirty: Creates a soggy mess we can’t recover
🛍️ Plastic bags: Too lightweight and get tangled in sorting equipment
📦 Styrofoam: Mostly air and breaks into tiny, contaminating pieces
🪢 Tanglers (cords, ropes, hoses, light strings): Wrap around and jam machinery

When in doubt, throw it out!

Hey MPIIers! Today is also Father’s Day. The first observance of Father’s Day was on July 5, 1908. Months earlier, the Monongah Mining Disaster killed 361 men, 250 of them fathers, in West Virginia. These left thousands of children fatherless. Grace Golden Clayton was undoubtedly aware of Anna Jarvis creating Mother’s Day in May of 1908 (also in West Virginia). She decided the fathers that died in the mining disaster should be honored as well. Then in 1910 in Washington, an additional Father’s Day was celebrated honoring all fathers on the 3rd Sunday in June. Today, Father’s Day is celebrated all over the world, on various dates, but most countries honor fathers on the 3rd Sunday in June. To all the fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, fathers-in-law, and father figures in MPII, Happy Father’s Day!
