💫What inspires you to teach yoga?
My students. It's pretty circular! I love seeing my students' practices evolve over time. Getting to know the things they're working on, the poses they have trouble with, and the ones they really enjoy, means I can better help them with specific challenges. And I really love the look of calm, centered concentration that comes over them when they really get into it. It's exciting to see yoga doing its thing.
💫Is there a mantra or philosophy that resonates with you and/or with your practice?
After every practice, I sit with hands to heart and mentally do a gratitude practice. I always begin with "Yoga is a gift, it's a blessing to be able to practice it."
💫What is your favorite yoga pose?
Headstand. It helps me feel balanced and present for a long time afterwards.
💫If I only have 5 minutes to practice, what poses would you recommend?
It depends on what you need. Tired, nervous, excited—there are different poses for all these states. But my go-to when I just want to move is usually something like cat/cow, graduating into a bigger version of the same action—child's pose gliding into a cobra. Then up-dog to down-dog a few times, nice and slow. Ending with a long hold in down-dog. It's just a really nice way to wake up the spine and organize your energy.
💫Do you have any yoga book recommendations?
The books I turn to most often are: The Heart of Yoga by T.K.V. Desikachar, Awakening the Spine by Vanda Scaravelli, and The 8 Human Talents by Gurmukh. Also Ashtanga Yoga: the Practice Manual, by David Swensen, but that's quite specific to Ashtanga.
💫How do you like to spend time outside of the studio?
I love all the usual things—hanging out with friends and family, home-cooked meals, long walks, good conversation. Some chocolate and a really good novel on a weekend afternoon is like heaven to me.
