ASH continues to engage with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on policies that impact patient access to care. In comments on the proposed rule addressing interoperability and prior authorization for drugs, ASH expressed support for efforts to modernize and streamline electronic prior authorization, increase transparency, and reduce administrative burden on patients and providers. The Society also emphasized the importance of standardized prior authorization requirements across health plans, appropriate clinical oversight of artificial intelligence (AI) and automated decision-making tools, and safeguards to help ensure timely access to medically necessary therapies.

The Trump Administration has proposed a new rule that applies to all federal agencies and would dramatically reshape the federal grant-making process and undermine research integrity. By converting the Uniform Guidance for Federal Financial Assistance into rigid regulation, the proposal would inject red tape, politicize funding decisions, and limit scientific dissemination across federal agencies.
ASH is gravely concerned that this rule will weaken NIH-funded hematology advances, delay cures and clinical trials, and jeopardize patient health outcomes. It would increase administrative burden, discourage early-career researchers, and threaten rare disease studies by curbing international collaboration.
ASH urges the Administration to rescind this proposal immediately to protect patients, preserve scientific integrity, and safeguard the nation’s medical research enterprise.
