The Mysore room usually has other students practicing right along side you. On this day I chose to practice after everyone already finished. A rare chance to record while I’m alone. To see how I’m progressing and share videos with others.

But I didn’t get here alone. Not even close. I had a whole community behind me to get to this point in my practice.

What you don’t see is everything that usually happens in that room. My teacher Janet Walkoe and the other teachers I’ve been fortunate to have, watching, assisting, adjusting, guiding, even on the days it looks like I’m on my own. The students do this for each other too. Just showing up and doing your own practice gives the whole room its warmth. It’s why the space feels safe. It’s the quiet energy of everyone being there together, the effort, the sweat, the reason we try one more time or stay a little longer in a pose than we meant to.

Some days my poses are strong. Some days they’re soft, or shaky, or not what I wanted. Both are the practice. Maybe you can tell from this video that I have an injury, feeling uncertain, or a little tight, or not as strong as I’d like. That’s all true on any given day.

If you’re new to this practice and wondering where you’d even start, here’s the truth: you don’t start where anyone else is. You start where you need to, and learn the basics with guidance, one breath and one day at a time. Slowly you build up to poses that might look pretty darn spectacular from where you began. Along the way you get to experience rest of the mind, how to show up fully for whatever you’re doing, and then, let go of how it turns out.

Come try Intro to Mysore with Janet Walkoe | Bluebird Sky Mysore September 5th.

Also, ask me why at 48 years old, I continue to practice Ashtanga yoga. It’s not always for the “gram” but I may have a different answer for each day of the week

Meet Stephanie, one of our beloved BSY members.

A lifelong athlete, Stephanie once thought yoga wouldn’t challenge her, until it became so much more than she expected.

What started as recovery for an injury grew into a practice she loves for its mindfulness, its challenge, and above all, its community. In her words, no matter what kind of day she’s had, walking into the studio feels grounding.

We featured Stephanie in our latest Community Connects in our newsletter, and we’re so grateful she shared her journey with us.

Has your practice supported you through something recently? We’d love to hear about it. Reach out and share your story. It just might inspire someone else to begin a practice of yoga. 💛

June 21 is a special day. 🌞 It’s both the Summer Solstice, the longest, lightest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, and International Yoga Day, recognized around the world to celebrate the practice and its roots.

It feels like the right day to remember that yoga is much bigger than what happens on the mat.

We often think of yoga as the poses. But asana is just one small part of a much deeper practice, one that asks us to breathe with intention, to soften how we treat ourselves and others, and to come fully into the present moment. The poses are simply the doorway.

So, however you practice, whether it is a full Mysore session or three quiet breaths before your first sip of coffee, know that you are part of something ancient and shared.

We would love to practice with you.

Join us for Sunday classes:

8:00 - 9:30 AM Mysore Ashtanga with Janet Walkoe | Bluebird Sky Mysore

10:00 - 11:00 AM Vinyasa with Molly Hoeg || Yoga

10:15 - 11:15 AM Slow Flow with Steve Wanna

Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu. May all beings everywhere be happy and free.

Today, we honor Juneteenth, the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free.

It’s a celebration of freedom, resilience, and joy. On the mat, we practice a small version of that same idea every time we open the heart, soften what we’ve been guarding, and make a little more room to breathe.

Our studio mantra says it best: Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu. May all beings everywhere be happy and free.

Wishing freedom and ease to our whole community today.🪷
