The best leader I ever had couldn't give me a raise.

So he gave me something that outlasted any paycheck—validation, support, books, and the space to grow into a better man.

Years later he's still a mentor I can call. That's what empathy in leadership does. It builds people, and it builds things that last.

This reframes everything I teach about discipline.

It's not punishment. It's not control. It's not getting in trouble. The word literally comes from the Latin for student—the same root as disciple. To be disciplined is to be a devoted follower of your own higher self.

That's the heart of Episode 3 of Workin' & Winnin' With Great Care.

I went for a walk before sunrise and ran into an old woman in the park. I asked how she was doing.

She said: "I'm working and I'm winning."

No job. No title. Just a woman who understood that if your body works — you have everything you need to win.

This poem is how Workin' & Winnin' With Great Care began. Watch the clip, then head to YushaVerse for the full episode and this week's free workbook.

My great-grandfather never said "I'm going to work." He said, "Let's get to work." This subtle shift in language reflects generations of identity lost.

When work became a place you go instead of something you do, an entire generation began to believe that without jobs, they had no worth. As a workforce development specialist, I witnessed this firsthand while working with Black women in a TANF program. Many would enter my class stating, "I don't work," expressing a sense of non-existence.

The issue was never the work itself; it was the definition of work. If your body works — if you can see, hear, feel, think, and create — you're already winning. The real question is how you will channel that energy.

This understanding goes beyond personal philosophy; it extends to organizations. Leaders who grasp this concept foster cultures where every team member recognizes that their value isn't tied to a job title. Schools that embrace this transform student beliefs, and communities that understand this stop devaluing themselves.

This is the foundation I bring into every room, whether I'm speaking, coaching executives, or supporting school transformation.
