Dance Loft on 14

Dance Loft on 14 is a Washington DC arts venue, featuring affordable dance classes and performances. So we are undertaking something extraordinary.

Since 2015 Dance Loft has made our home in a former 1920’s art-deco movie theater in uptown 14th Street NW. This building has been a place for the arts for nearly 100 years, and its unique beauty has been part of why we knew this was the place to put down roots. After nearly a century of deferred maintenance, however, our building’s structural needs are escalating fast — faster than we could ever

“I think at a fundamental level I just believed, and continue to believe, that art space is important. Creative people need creative space.”

In this last installment of our 10th Anniversary Video Series, we look at what lies ahead for Dance Loft’s space. The redevelopment of our crumbling building is an important part of expanding as an arts organization and creative hub within DC.

We’ve diligently worked to fulfill our mission to create a space that’s supported artists, a studio that’s seen the evolution of hundreds of students, & an organization that served its community to the best of its ability for the past 10 years. Now, looking to the future, we dream about the next decade and what endless possibilities may be in store for us.

So, when the time comes, we hope you’ll “Move With Us.”

“We had a strong desire to serve both the local community, the public schools, and our neighbors right outside of our door.”

In Part 3 of our 10th Anniversary Video Series, Diana discusses our commitment to Dance Education. For eight years, Dance Loft’s team has brought free bilingual creative movement classes to Ward 4 elementary schools, and under the direction of Etta Hulcher & Kami McCracken, our Dance Education programming has grown immensely in just the past year. This year we reached over 250 students in field trip performances alone; we expanded Dance Loft to a new location at Ft. Totten in a partnership with Explore! Art Place DC, and increased the number of programs within schools and within Dance Loft itself, furthering our goal of serving our community of Ward 4–and beyond!

This season, Dance Loft + Moveius Ballet is on the move. We open our 11th Season with Prelude: A Season of Migration, pairing Diana Movius's Seasons of Resilience and Apocrita with two works by the legendary Roudolf Kharatian. From there, the season celebrates the communities that make our organization vibrant— a South Asian Dance Festival, A Nutcracker Dream, Amor a la Inmigración, a two-month Dance Loft Presents! Festival, an Earth Day program at Glen Echo Park, and ending the season with Encore: Director's Cut, a June finale built entirely around Moveius Ballet's own choreographic voices.

Wherever you find us this year, we hope you'll MOVE WITH US.

UPDATE: Prelude: Season of Migration will now be performed at Dance Loft Theater

“Moveius Contemporary Ballet is poised to become a national force of creativity.”

In Part 2 of our 10th Anniversary Video Series, we continue with Dance Loft’s company in residence, Moveius Contemporary Ballet. In 2015, the company started to gravitate towards choreographic visions created by Diana Movius, using longer and more challenging works that sparked its evolution, growing in both talent and size. Today, Moveius continues to present works that push boundaries, bringing in new choreographers to create original works that speak to current events and the times that we now live in.

“Right out of the gate, Dance Loft became a space that was sparking NEW art.”

In this 10th Anniversary Video Series, Founder and Artistic Director Diana Movius dives into the different components that make up Dance Loft + Moveius Ballet as a whole. In Part 1: Dance Loft on 14, she expands on the establishment of Dance Loft. Dance Loft was created as a space for DC artists in response to a lack of rehearsal & performance space in the DC area, and it couldn’t have been better received. Diana created a place that could be a home to both seasoned & emerging artists, a place that now sparks new art each week.
