👀 Did Stefon Diggs switching to No. 3 tell us something before the Commanders made their roster move?

Wole and Donna Hopkins from Tony McGee’s Pro Football Plus questioned why the Washington Commanders changed Stefon Diggs to No. 3 during the preseason while safety Will Harris was also wearing No. 3.

Their point: why create unnecessary tension over a jersey number before the roster is finalized? Diggs could have stayed in No. 18 until the preseason ended and roster decisions were complete.

Then came the twist: Washington released Will Harris.

Was the number change an early sign of what the Commanders already planned to do, or was it simply awkward timing?

🏈 Commanders fans: What did you think when Diggs switched to No. 3?

The Washington Commanders fell 17-13 to the Detroit Lions in their second game of the 2026 NFL preseason, but there were several encouraging performances and important roster developments coming out of Detroit.

Donna Hopkins, Washington Commanders reporter from Tony McGee’s Pro Football Plus, joins Wole to recap Commanders vs. Lions and provide her firsthand perspective after covering the game in Detroit, attending the postgame press conferences and speaking with players afterward.

Washington’s starting defense made an immediate impact, playing fast and physical while forcing two early turnovers. Joshua Josephs recovered a fumble in the end zone, while Quan Martin recorded his second interception of the preseason. The Commanders finished the game with five sacks and have now forced six turnovers through their first two preseason games.

🏈 Topics include:

• Biggest takeaways from the Commanders’ 17-13 loss to Detroit
• How Washington’s starting defense performed against the Lions
• Quan Martin continuing his impressive preseason
• Joshua Josephs and the Commanders’ improved pass rush
• Washington recording five sacks against Detroit
• What Donna heard from players and coaches after the game
• Jayden Daniels and the starting offense’s limited action
• Athan Kaliakmanis strengthening his case in the quarterback competition
• Jaden Bradley’s spectacular one-handed catch
• Players who helped or hurt their chances of making the 53-man roster
• The biggest remaining Commanders position battles
• What Washington must clean up before the regular season

Athan Kaliakmanis also made a strong impression, completing 78% of his passes for 162 yards while showing his ability to attack downfield. He connected with Nick Nash for a 55-yard gain and Jaden Bradley for a 30-yard completion as he continues battling Sam Hartman for a roster spot.

Bradley delivered one of the highlights of the afternoon with a one-handed catch along the sideline, adding another impressive moment to his push for a roster or practice-squad opportunity in Washington’s crowded receiver room.

With roster cuts approaching, every preseason snap matters. Donna gives Commanders fans an on-the-ground perspective from Detroit on which players are separating themselves and what she learned inside the locker room and during the postgame press conferences.
