When Katie Rainsberger began her professional running career a few years ago, she had Olympic-qualifying potential in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. At the time, the marathon distance was far from her mind.
But fast forward to 2025, and Rainsberger found herself on the starting line of the Berlin Marathon, racing in the mass field with a renewed purpose in the sport. After battling mysterious running struggles and undergoing a life-changing surgery, the 27-year-old had formed an entirely new relationship with running—and she continues to love it.

One year ago, Taylor set a 5K personal record of 20:50 (6:40 pace) at the Dime McCarren 5K! Exactly one year later, in even hotter conditions, Taylor smashed that PR and finished the same race in 19:25 (6:15 pace).
In Taylor’s words, “As always I would like to express my gratitude to you. I continue to improve and surprise myself and I owe a large part of that to you. There’s no question I’d be here without you and I truly don’t take it for granted.
I went in to today with an open mind. I really just wanted to beat my time from last year as this was my first race of the summer and I knew it would be hot. As a 5K usually does, it started to feel hard by the halfway point and I knew I needed to dig deep mentally to hang on. What helped me push through was remembering all of our training — the workouts you planned for me gave me the confidence I needed when I started doubting if I could hold my pace. Thank you for being the best coach and always looking out for me.”
Taylor’s average 5K pace is 6:15, but her average easy run pace is consistently between 9:00 and 9:30. Taylor also listens to her body and takes an extra rest day or two when she feels overly tired or is traveling for the weekend.
Taylor also enjoys the process of training, rather than stressing about her results, which led to big improvements.
Congratulations to Taylor on this milestone!

As runners get older, chasing pace at every session can do more harm than good.
Instead of obsessing over what your watch says, Olympian Jo Pavey recommends focusing on effort – a simple shift that can help you train smarter, stay healthier and keep improving for longer.
