Dear Yogis:

If you attend my classes, you know how much respect I have for the psoas muscle. That's because it impacts more joints of your body than any other single muscle. "Branching off like a crazy starfish", the psoas (SO-az) muscles on each side of your spine attach to all the vertebrae between the bottom of the rib cage and your sacrum and the lumbar spine's intervertebral discs before terminating at the top of your thigh bone.

A "sticky" psoas has the ability to alter the orientation of your spine, hips, pelvis, or knee and potentially all four of theses at once. A deep ache in the lower back that gets worse when you stand, a pinpoint pain in the groin or front hip especially after sitting a long time, altered walking, trouble standing up straight, or one leg feeling shorter than the other (due to the tilting of the pelvis) are all symptomatic of a stuck psoas.

Embedded between the layers of the psoas is the lumbar plexus, a dense collection of nerves that innervate the abdominal muscles, the pelvic floor, the deep hip rotators, and most of your thigh muscles.

Because the psoas attaches at multiple locations, passes over multiple joints, and entraps a major neurological network, it gets a lot of love at Equipose.

The Modified Thomas Test (shown above) will help you determine if or to what extent your psoas is tight. Lie on your back on the edge of your bed, pull one knee to your chest, and let the other leg hang off the bed. If the hanging leg rises up and cannot drop straight down toward the floor, the hip flexor or psoas is tight. We do low lunges in yoga, which are the best release. Marching in place or lying face down on the stability ball and doing donkey kicks (bend the knee at a right angle and kick up) are also helpful.

Dear Yogis:

Sustained physical exercise for 20 minutes Is what scientists and the studies have termed "The Miracle Grow for the Brain." Not medication, not meditation, not journaling or therapy can release bdnf or brain derived neurotrophic factor like exercise can.

Exercise promotes the growth of new neurons, strengthens existing neural connections and physically repairs the damage that chronic stress, poor sleep and emotional dysregulation can cause over time.

Exercise also produces the most balanced and sustained neurochemical combination available for the human brain. Dopamine for motivation, serotonin for mood stability, norepinephrine for focus and resilience, endorphins for pain regulation and as an emotional buffer.

No supplement, no medication, and no practice can produce all of those bdnf's simultaneously like exercise.
Multiple studies have shown that exercise is as effective for mild to moderate depression as antidepressants. Exercise also reduces anxiety, improves, sleep and slows cognitive decline

You don't need a gym to unlock your neurological resilience pharmacy. Movement is STILL not an option if you want to live your best life.

Dear Yogis:

I realized how little I knew about the importance of the lymphatic system while I was watching a podcast about its functions. So, this post is a brief discussion about that system and why movement is not optional if you want to maintain order, defense and balance in your body.

First, this system has no pump to make it work. It depends on your movement (muscle contractions) and breathing to work. It runs alongside blood vessels threading through tissues and organs to collect what circulation leaves behind: excess fluid, proteins, and cellular waste. This fluid becomes lymph. This lymph passes through lymph nodes which are small checkpoints packed with immune cells. These nodes identify threats to the body and then filter and neutralize them before they can spread. This system also transports fats absorbed from digestion and sends them through a separate system to be processed.

If this lymph system is impaired, swelling, a weakened system and slow recovery occurs. The lymphatic system has been called "The Silent Defender," keeping internal spaces clear and tissues healthy.

Dear Yogis:

There is a misconception about the subconscious brain: that it runs in the background mysteriously without your control. It is actually an accumulation of everything you have ever experienced, been told, believed and repeatedly thought. It is a pattern library that runs 95% of your thoughts, decisions, and behaviors without your conscious awareness. Most of these patterns were formed before you were seven years old. The version of you that shows up in your relationships, careers, finances, and health are patterns that you did not choose.

However, the subconscious is not a locked room; it is a pattern system that responds to new input. Every time you have a new experience that contradicts an old belief, your subconscious updates. Repeating a new thought or feeling a genuine conviction writes new code in the subconscious. If the environment you
create reflects who you want to be rather than who you have been, you give your subconscious new evidence to work from. We can be programmers of our lives, but we were never taught how to use the interface.

The power of this information echoes the yogic teachings of practicing positive affirmation in our lives!

"When the old ache arrives, I remind it that we live differently now. We eat, we rest, we ask for help. We do not build altars to what hurt us. We build mornings around sunlight and the sound of our own name said kindly. The ache learns its place and I learn mine." Anonymous
