How to go surfing in New York City this August?

Wake up early and head to Rockaway Beach. We arrived around sunrise, parked for free near Beach 69th Street, and walked two minutes to Beach 67th, where the break looked better.

The forecast called for one-to-two-foot waves, so we brought a nine-foot longboard, perfect for getting the most out of smaller summer surf.

At this time of the morning, there were only a few people on the beach and nobody else in the water. We each caught around 30 waves before the city properly woke up.

Check the forecast, bring the right board, and get there early. August surfing in NYC is worth the 5 AM alarm.
