Katalyst Kombatives

Katalyst Kombatives Katalyst Kombatives is the premier adult only self-defense oriented gym in Virginia Beach. New students start with a $20 Intro Experience.

Katalyst Kombatives is a modern Krav Maga and self-defense gym in Virginia Beach, Virginia, led by owner and head instructor David Bergman. We train adults only, from total beginners to experienced martial artists, in practical civilian self-defense built for real situations rather than sport or competition. Classes cover striking, escapes, weapon defense, and situational awareness. Every technique gets tested against live resistance, so you find out what actually holds up under pressure instead of taking someone's word for it. It's money-back, and it credits toward membership. Serving Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, and the surrounding Hampton Roads area.

The direction that feels like escaping is the one that helps him.

Want to train it with a coach watching? DM us WRONGWAY and we'll get you started.

If I'm already cranking down on the choke, she doesn't want to walk that direction. She's not getting her posture back that way.

So if she tries it, I just finish. It makes it easier for me to squeeze.

What she actually wants is to alleviate the squeeze, and she does that by pulling my body the other way.

Shoot the arm through. Keep the wrist loose.

Want to train it with a coach watching? DM us ROCKBABY and we'll get you started.

Connect to your own wrist, hooking underneath. Then pull through, hips forward, and tilt the arm to the side to get the tap.

Turn the elbow and connect it to your torso while you pull your arm through like a rope.

Almost like snatching a piece of rope around their neck and lifting up.

Then loop, turn to the side, and pull up. Almost like you're rocking a baby.

We can look at a picture of World War II and not understand a thing about World War II.

But look at the picture and go, oh, I think I get it now?

You'd be missing a ton of information. Smells. Sounds. Fatigue.

That's what a technique is.

There's no fatigue in it. There's no other person actively fighting you. None of the information that's actually there in the environment.

Sure, you might be able to conceptually do the thing. But then it's like, well, I'm tired right now, I can't do that thing.

Okay. Then the technique doesn't work when you're tired, I guess.

When someone grabs you, what matters is stopping it. The name of the move can wait.

Learn to keep it from happening first. Pick up the terms and the details later if you get into it.

Losing a round in training costs you nothing. It shows you what fits your body.

The principles are the same for everyone. Making them work depends on your grip, your age, your mobility, your height.

Losing is how you find your version of it.

Starting a drill already pinned and wrapped up skips the part that matters most.

In a real fight you don't just appear there. Something put you in that spot, and that's where the training should start. Drill escapes from positions you never learned to avoid, and you're practicing compliance.

Being taller helps in a guillotine. It's not where the finish comes from.

Watch the squeeze. The elbow rotates towards the hips compressing the space. Get that part right and size matters a lot less.

If you're usually the smaller one on the mat, save this.

Most people blame their technique.

You got caught. You lost the position. The obvious read is that you did the move wrong.

Usually you weren't paying attention. Something pulled your focus, and somebody slipped a thing through while your brain was somewhere else.

That isn't a technical failure. It's a lapse of focus, or focus pointed at the wrong thing.

Holding a goal, and being able to toggle between goals without dropping either one, is a large part of fighting.

Nobody lifts a barbell sideways.

Watch a clean and jerk. They step square to the bar, drive it with the hips, catch it out front.

Somebody picking you up has to do the same thing. Square the hips, then lift.

So the hips are the tell. When they square up, you're about to go airborne.

That's also your window. Cut through and get in between the stance before the lift happens.

Sometimes I just like to be contrarian.

Pummeling drills. Swim, switch head position, switch, switch. Everyone puts a lot of reps into it.

After you get the flow and can repeat on demand there is a very limited return.

Is it worth the class time... sometimes I'm not sure. But it opens up drills that I like so for now it stays in class.
