One of the ideas I heard often coming up through martial arts was that rank brings privilege.
I don’t believe that anymore.
Rank should bring responsibility.
The longer you train, the more experience you gain, and the more you should be able to give back to the people coming behind you. That does not mean placing yourself above them. It does not mean expecting special treatment, demanding deference, or putting senior instructors on a pedestal.
It means paying it forward.
Someone helped you when you were new. Someone corrected you, trained with you, answered your questions, and gave you opportunities to grow. As you advance, part of your responsibility is to do the same for someone else.
That is how a dojo becomes stronger.
Rank should never be about becoming more important than the people around you. It should be about becoming more useful to them.
At CoVA Karate, that is the kind of culture we want to build.

One of the things I enjoy most about talking with prospective students is discovering why they're looking for martial arts in the first place.
This week I asked two of our newer women students what led them to CoVA Karate. Their answers were remarkably similar.
It wasn't that they were looking for the "best" martial art. They weren't trying to compare styles or decide who wins the endless debates that seem to exist online.
They were looking for a different training experience.
They wanted to stay on their feet. They wanted to improve their movement, balance, coordination, posture, and confidence. They wanted to invest in a body that would continue serving them well years from now, while also learning practical self-protection along the way.
That conversation reminded me that not everyone is searching for the same thing, and that's one of the things I appreciate about the martial arts. Different systems have different strengths, and different people have different goals.
At CoVA Karate, we've chosen to focus on helping adults develop capable movement first. We believe that when you build a body that moves well, responds well, and can adapt under pressure, self-protection becomes a natural extension of that training rather than the only reason for it.
If you're in Virginia Beach and you've been thinking about martial arts, maybe the first question isn't, "Which style is the best?"
Maybe it's, "What kind of person—and what kind of body—do I want to become?"
For us, that's where the journey begins.

Move better.
Understand more.
Become more capable.
That’s what we want training at CoVA Karate to do.
For adults, martial arts should be about more than learning techniques or getting another workout.
It should help you improve your mobility, balance, coordination, and body control.
It should help you understand why movements work—not just memorize what someone tells you to do.
And over time, it should help you become more capable than you were before.
You don’t have to already be flexible.
You don’t have to be in great shape.
And you don’t have to prove anything when you walk through the door.
You start where you are, ask questions, train with purpose, and improve from there.
That’s the kind of adult martial arts environment we’re building at CoVA Karate in Virginia Beach.
If that sounds like what you’ve been looking for, come experience two free classes with us inside a regular adult class.
No sales pitch. Just come train and see if it’s right for you.

🥋 Virginia Beach 100 Kata Challenge — October 25, 2026
This year, we’re keeping it simple.
No big production. No elaborate competition.
Just a group of people meeting up, learning something new, training together, and seeing if we can complete 100 repetitions of kata.
CoVA Karate will teach everyone the same beginner-friendly kata before we start, so you do not need any previous karate or martial arts experience to participate.
Kids, adults, experienced martial artists, complete beginners — everyone is welcome.
We’re thinking a local park or similar outdoor location, some hamburgers and hot dogs, drinks, and an afternoon of training together.
The goal is simple:
👉 Learn the kata
👉 Practice it together
👉 Complete 100 repetitions
👉 Meet some new people
👉 Have some fun doing something most people have never tried
Those who complete all 100 repetitions will receive a certificate recognizing the accomplishment.
This will be our first year doing it. We want to keep it small, relaxed and community-focused and see where it grows from there.
If this sounds like something you or your family would like to try, comment below or send CoVA Karate a message.
More details will be coming as we get closer to October 25.
