We have a very special second post from Grimm Arms today for a very special gun. Pictured is a rare Lee Horton Special Edition Smith & Wesson 60-10 Magna-ported in .357 mag. This is a real beauty! Call 304-834-4556 for details and availability. And now, a history as I have found.

The Smith & Wesson Model 60-10 is a 5-shot, stainless steel J-frame revolver featuring a 3-inch full-lug barrel and adjustable sights, introduced in 1996 when S&W lengthened the cylinder and strengthened the frame to handle powerful .357 Magnum loads.

Distributor Context

Lee Horton Distributing Co.: A prominent fi****ms distributor based in Massachusetts known for commissioning exclusive, limited-run configurations from major manufacturers like Smith & Wesson.

The "Small Hunter" Run: Users on collector forums note that specific batches of the Model 60-10 were distributed through Lew Horton as special configurations, occasionally featuring factory upgrades such as Mag-na-Port barrel venting.

The Lithgow No. 1 Mk III is an Australian-made bolt-action service r***e chambered in .303 British that was produced at the Lithgow Small Arms Factory from 1912 through 1956.

Factory Beginnings and World War
Opening: The Lithgow Small Arms Factory opened in New South Wales in June 1912 to build the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) Mk III locally.

Wartime Push: Production scaled up quickly for World War I. Lithgow sent most of its early r***es to Britain to help with urgent military shortages.

Simplification: Lithgow later shifted to the simplified Mk III* design, which omitted features like the magazine cutoff and long-range volley sights to speed up manufacturing.

Output: Workers built roughly 640,000 of these r***es across the factory's lifespan.

World War II and Later Service

Standard Issue: The r***e, known widely as the "three-oh-three," served as the primary weapon for the Australian Army through World War II.

Theatres of War:

Australian and Commonwealth forces carried Lithgow SMLE r***es in North Africa, the Middle East, Italy, and Pacific jungle campaigns.

Korea: The rugged r***e remained in active Australian military service into the Korean War.

The Thompson/Center "Cougar" refers to special, limited-edition runs of fi****ms produced by Thompson/Center Arms in the late 1980s to early 1990s, notable for their distinct engravings and satin stainless furniture.

Key History and Features
The "Cat-Side" Contender Frames: Earlier single-shot Thompson/Center Contender handguns from the mid-1980s featured a full-body cougar or snarling cougar head engraved on both sides of the receiver, affectionately called "cat-side" frames.

The Hawken Cougar Muzzleloader:
T/C also produced a special edition of their flagship Hawken black powder r***e. This limited version featured a satin-finish barrel, upgraded stainless steel furniture (instead of standard blue or brass), highly figured wood or maple stocks, and a special stock medallion.

Era of Production:
These commemorative and special cosmetic runs mostly took place during the late 1980s and early 1990s before eventually being discontinued.

The 1945 Long Branch No. 4 Mk I* (and Mk I) r***e was produced by the Canadian crown corporation Small Arms Limited in Long Branch, Ontario, representing Canada's peak wartime mass production of the iconic Lee–Enfield bolt-action battle r***e.

Factory Origins and Production in 1945

Establishment: The Long Branch plant near Toronto was approved in 1940 and began turning out r***es by June 1941 to support Allied forces in World War II. Two-thirds of the workforce were women.

The 1945 Context

By 1945, production incorporated wartime simplifications like the simplified bolt-head removal notch (denoted by the asterisk * in Mk I*) and locally sourced North American woods like birch or beech for the furniture. Design Features: Canadian-manufactured No. 4 r***es featured distinct characteristics, including different bar-style safety catches compared to British loops, and distinct stampings like trigger guards alongside characteristic metal finishes.

Post-War Legacy and Service

Commonwealth Use: While built to aid World War II efforts, 1945-era and wartime Long Branch r***es remained in military stockpiles and saw subsequent deployment during the Korean War and Cold War eras by Commonwealth nations, including extensive use and re-serial numbering by the New Zealand Army.

The 1940 Romanian contract for the Czechoslovak vz. 24 r***e occurred amid severe geopolitical turmoil, following the German annexation of Czechoslovakia. Deliveries during this period shifted from royal crests to blank or year-stamped receivers as King Carol II was overthrown, and these r***es eventually armed Romanian troops on the Eastern Front.

Production and Crest Transitions in 1940
Serial Block Transition: 1940 production roughly coincided with the transition through the mid-to-late alphabetical suffix blocks (such as the "OR" through "RR" ranges featuring a "1940" stamp, moving later into blank configurations (such as the "OR" through "RR" ranges featuring a "1940" stamp, moving later into blank configurations like the "UR" block).

Loss of Royal Crests: Early contracts featured King Carol II's royal crest, but by 1940 political instability and his September 1940 abdication meant r***es from this point onward were manufactured without royal crests or left completely blank on the receiver ring.

By mid-1943, cumulative deliveries for the broader Romanian vz. 24 contracts reached roughly 445,640 r***es, making it the standard infantry r***e of the Romanian Army.

Combat Deployment: Romanian vz. 24s saw extensive combat during World War II after Romania entered the Axis, fighting in Bessarabia, Ukraine, and sustaining devastatingly heavy casualties during the Battle of Stalingrad.

The Husqvarna M38 is a Swedish bolt-action service r***e chambered in 6.5x55mm. Manufactured by Husqvarna Vapenfabriks AB between 1941 and 1944, it represents the purpose-built "Type II" version of the Swedish M38 short r***e, created during World War II to supply the growing needs of the Swedish military.

Origins and Production
The M38 Concept: Sweden adopted the M38 short r***e in 1938 to bridge the gap between long infantry r***es and short carbines, targeting mechanized units and the Navy.

Two Variants: The military designation M38 covers two distinct types: converted M96 long r***es (Type I, cut down by Carl Gustaf from 1938–1940) and entirely new production r***es (Type II).

Husqvarna's Role: Husqvarna Vapenfabriks AB manufactured approximately 65,588 new M38 r***es from 1941 through 1944, utilizing high-grade Swedish steel.

Key Design Features
Chambering: Fires the flat-shooting, highly accurate 6.5x55mm Swedish Ma**er cartridge.

Update on the Manhattan Fi****ms Co. revolver!

Took this revolver apart yesterday, what I discovered left me in shock! The serial number is 12! Did some research and it was manufactured in 1858 while the company was still in New York. As if there was any debate, this will stay in my personal collection. Sometimes even a blind hog finds an acorn!
