A wide fairway can actually make it harder to choose a target.

There’s plenty of room, so golfers often aim at the general fairway and swing without a clear picture. But “somewhere out there” isn’t a target.
Dan Young selected one specific bunker in the distance that split the fairway. That gave him a small, precise reference point and allowed him to commit fully to the shot.
The objective was simple: get the ball in the fairway and put the next shot in play.
No matter how wide the landing area looks, always choose one small target and commit to it.

Some days you know almost immediately that you don’t have your best game. Nothing feels quite right, and you can’t seem to hit anything close—but you still have to compete.
At one over par with four holes remaining, I reset the goal: play the rest of the round under par, learn from the earlier mistakes, and get every approach shot to the hole.

The Difference Between a Bad Shot and a Committed Swing

Commitment can completely change a golf shot. After failing to commit to the first attempt, I stepped into the next one with a clear decision and produced a much better result.
Even when you don’t have your best game, find the positives and use them as fuel for your next round.

A good tee shot isn’t just one that finds the fairway—it sets up the strategy for the entire hole.

With a bunker on one side and water on the other, this par 5 can look intimidating from the tee. Dan Young’s plan was to favor the left side while giving himself enough room for his typical fade to move safely to the right.
Why the left side?
Because that position creates the best angle to play the second shot up the right side, setting up a much better approach into the green.
That’s how you play a par 5 backward. Every shot should create an advantage for the one that follows.
Before choosing your target, ask yourself: Where does my next shot need to be played from?

My Best Birdie Chance Came on the Final Hole

After struggling to give myself realistic birdie opportunities, I finally hit a 54-degree wedge inside 20 feet on the final hole. It was my shortest birdie putt of the day and a chance to finish the round back at even par. All I could do was give it a run!
