A solid flatty for 👊

When Matt isn't in the water chasing halibut and lingcod, he's putting in work with — fighting to protect our fisheries, defend public access, and make sure future generations have the same opportunities to fish we do.

Yellowtail are curious fish. If you can get them interested, they’ll often come in for a closer look.

A flasher can help. Toss it out in front of you, let it sink to a depth you’re comfortable diving, then make your drop. Keep scanning in every direction, and don’t forget to look above you. They spend a lot of time in the upper water column, and that’s where they’ll often surprise you.

Once you get a shot, stay focused. Yellowtail fight hard. Watch your shooting line, and do your best to keep the fish from reaching the reef. Unlike many other pelagics, their first move is often straight for the bottom, where they can wrap you up quickly.

And when everything comes together, you’ve got some of the best sashimi and poke around. 🤙

In this video, Joey, Sam, and I work together to recover a yellowtail that Joey shot after it tied up in the reef at about 60 feet.

We used a one-up, one-down approach, managed the line carefully, and met the ascending diver partway up to add another layer of safety. It wasn’t about rushing the fish—it was about working together and staying patient.

Good buddy diving, clear communication, and proper line management made all the difference.

A reminder: No fish is worth your life. Always dive within your limits, dive with a capable buddy, and get proper training. A freediving course can teach the skills that help make situations like this much safer.

A huge thank you to Terry Maas for so generously sharing his time, knowledge, and decades of incredible experiences with our spearfishing community. The stories, lessons, and wisdom he shared are the kind of things you simply can’t find on the internet—they come from a lifetime of adventure and dedication to the sport.

This was a truly special, meaningful, and one-of-a-kind event. Everyone who attended walked away with something valuable, whether it was a new perspective, a practical lesson, or inspiration for their next adventure. If you couldn’t make it, you genuinely missed a rare opportunity.

We’re also incredibly grateful to everyone who attended and helped make the evening so memorable. A special shoutout goes to the Blue Tuna Spearfishing crew, whose hard work behind the scenes—from planning and setup to welcoming guests and keeping everything running smoothly—made this event possible.

If you attended, we’d really appreciate you taking a few minutes to share your honest, constructive feedback. So far, we’ve only received feedback from two attendees, and we’d love to hear from more of you. Your comments will not only help us improve future events, but they’ll also provide valuable input for Terry as he prepares to give this presentation to the Neptunes later this year.

Please share your feedback here:

Every response makes a difference. Thank you for helping us continue to build meaningful events for the spearfishing community, and we look forward to seeing you at the next Blue Tuna Spearfishing event!
