🚨ITS PEAK GOATHEAD SEASON🚨 Many customers that come in with flat tires caused by these bad boys may be familiar with the dried out seed pods that cause punctures, but not many people are familiar with the plant itself. The goathead plant (Tribulus terrestris), also known as puncturevine or devil’s thorn, is a tough, low-growing annual w**d. It features small yellow flowers, hairy stems, and woody seed pods with sharp spikes strong enough to puncture bicycle tires and hurt pet paws. They are found in dry, sandy recently disturbed soil like the dirt found surrounding parks, next to bike paths and on road shoulders. Being able to identify the plant can help you avoid punctures, but the seed pods can blow on to paths in high winds or can even be carried onto the path by other riders pedestrians or animals. Many people try sealants, tire liners and thicker tubes to protect against these little devils, but the pest protection is tire selection and tubeless setups. We offer both at Fondo’s! In case you’ve been needing some inspiration… This has been an idea in the back of my head for the last couple years, but these Hooligans are tough to find! I wanted to build a head turning do-anything minivelo and here it is! Decided on the hooligan 8 platform because it uses easy to customize standards and the extreme frame design catches looks everywhere it goes. Here’s the build out:
-1x8 speed microshift acolyte super short cage derailleur, 11-38 cassette
-Wolftooth 44t 130 bcd chainring
-KS exaform lever actuated dropper post 150mm travel
-Chunky Maxxis Maxxdaddy tires for trips to the beach/mountains!
-Old Blackburn front touring rack to carry ride/camping necessities
-Shimano santé cranks because they’re white
There’s still a couple things left to do to finish out the build, but I was too excited to share it. Next up is sim works fun bars, a wheel build then maybe some custom frame bags👀. Come check it out in person on the next Fondos brew ride on August 28th
