Physical wounds are easy to see, like a bruise or a cut that bleeds. Emotional wounds are a bit trickier. Although some emotional wounds have a clear story attached so the incident is remembered, that’s not always the case.

Some emotional wounds are created by what didn’t happen. They form when comfort, help, or support a child needs during a difficult moment or crisis is missing. They can also come from having emotional needs dismissed, criticized, or ignored, or from being treated as though your feelings don’t matter.

These things are part of what makes Childhood Emotional Neglect so difficult to recognize.

Childhood Emotional Neglect (CEN) leaves invisible wounds. Many people live with its effects without knowing why.

That was true for me.

I knew I needed help but didn’t understand how deep it went. I went to counseling, and through that process, some of my pain was revealed and validated. Healing began. But I still didn’t have a name for another wound I carried.

Later, I learned about CEN through Dr. Jonice Webb’s book Running on Empty. As I read, I began to understand something I hadn’t been able to see before. Sometimes the deepest wounds aren’t only about what happened to us. Sometimes they’re also about what we needed but didn’t receive.

Before you read any further, I want to say something important.
