Happy Birthday Molly! 🎂✨

It’s hard to believe it’s only been 6 months since molly cameron joined us back in February, because it already feels like she’s been a part of the Campfire family forever!

From her 17 years running Portland Bicycle Studio to the incredible heart and expertise she brings to our team every single day, Molly keeps our catalog dialed, our orders flowing, and our behind-the-scenes machinery humming. We are so grateful for everything she brings to our community.

Wishing you the absolute happiest of birthdays today, Molly!

Mike’s Giant Bike

Our friend Mike brought in his giant Lane Kagay cargo bike, which he had built in 2011 and later converted to an e-bike. This thing is big, with a cargo capacity larger than most modern sedans. I love seeing these around hauling freight. You could easily fit a small loaded pallet on here; it really is the semi-truck of bikes.

Furry little friends

The other week Jake had the brilliant idea of reorganizing the shop area. It was a fun exercise in reflecting on our movements in the shop, our frustrations and taking action to make it better. One thing I appreciate about Jake is his thoughtfulness and mindfulness to all things.

Still feeling out what I can and can’t do at Campfire, I’m hesitant to stir the pot too much. Jake however did not hesitate to make a great soup and suggest we build a nook for Susan. Having her by my side while I’m wrenching on someone’s bike means the world to me. She even helps inspect every tool and new component for quality with sniffs before final install. I’m grateful to Josh and the rest of the Campfire crew for their love and care for Susan.

6 lb Burrito, A Love Story 🌯❤️

Last week, we couldn’t take it anymore. We’ve heard the legend of the B-Rex and have dreamt about it for years. Sharing Tucson’s largest burrito with some friends is something I’ve thought about since I first heard of Tanias 33 B-Rex in 2016.

Last Friday was the day. Toby, Elliot, and I decided we needed to have a good lunch and share this giant burrito. I placed the order in the morning, and when it arrived, we naturally had to weigh it. This thing was 6 lbs (heavier than its advertised weight) with five tortillas holding it all together!
We partitioned the burrito into three equal portions and went to town. It was the best lunch, and my third fed me for two days!

Lunch can be brought from home or sometimes ordered depending on wants and needs. Tania’s 33 is a regular burrito order spot for us because they have delicious burritos and homemade tortillas. They also have a picture on the wall with a T-Rex and a tray sized burrito. Rumours have been whispered of someone seeing it, tales have been told of of the lore of the B-Rex. Some of you might know of our payday tradition that David and Jacob have continued from their REI days. This last Friday, after many conversations of whether the B-Rex existed, we finally did it. We ordered one. 6.3 pounds of pure pleasure was had and split between Jacob, Elliot and myself. Behold the majesty of B-REX!

New Benches!

Elliot Elliot DuMont and I swapped benches last week to spice things up in the shop and reorganize everything. We got some tool drawers and fresh pegs, and it is nice to have an organized and fresh workstation.

We have a few more organizing projects in the shop this summer before getting ready for the next season of wrenching.

A leg to stand on

A local couple came into the shop recently to buy racks and lo and behold, their kickstands had little kicks (see what I did there?)! Besides being the cutest thing ever, it was such a wonderful reminder that you can make bikes fun and kooky and whimsical!

Enjoy the ride and adorn your bike with tiny sneakers if you want, at least it’ll be sure footed (ok, I’ll stop now).

Hot Dog for a Hot Dog

Generally, Elliot rides in with Susan on his back. However, with this much warmer weather, they’ve been doing a bit less. Two weeks ago, I snapped this pic of Elliot and Susan on their way home. As they’re leaving, Elliot asks me to put this hot dog in his bag.

The idea of multiple hot dogs in Elliot’s backpack was hilarious. The real question is: did all the hot dogs make it home in one piece!?!

Announcing Our Fall Bikepacking Trips!!!

We've got two great trips planned for September and November! We hope you can join us for some epic bikepacking fun.

A Return to Lobo Lupes,
this time the Lower Loop
We’re really excited to bring a new-to-us route to our bikepacking series as we cruise towards the end of summer, September 25th to 27th! We’ll be heading over to the White Mountains to do a shortened version of Forest Radarian’s Lobo Lupes Loop that Kurt Refsnider and Kate Boyle designed. It’s 139miles and 12,288 feet of climbing (and descending) into pure joy.

Intermediate Overnighter to Ironwood
On the weekend of November 14th and 15th, we’re headed back to Ironwood national forest to do the Ironwood loop. Route is 48 miles with 1600 feet of climbing, but don’t let those numbers fool you, there is some sand and chonk that make for some nice longish days of riding.

This trip does have some challenges to it. We’ll call it intermediate level and not advisable as a first time bikepacking trip due to some of the rocky and sandy sections that add a challenge as well as the need to carry most of your water and all your food.

Candidly Moving

We all have to get around. As humans over a millennia and more we’ve created infrastructure to help us move through the world. From simple foot paths and trails to cobble stone roads to sidewalks, freeways and air travel, there’s not shortage of ways we get about.

I serve as the president of the board of a transportation advocacy organization in Tucson called Living Streets Alliance. We advocate for safe, accessible and dignified ways to get around. A lot of the work can feel disconnected from the outcomes working against large forces. Every now and then there’s a glimpse of what we’re fighting for.

I watched a couple share an e-scooter and zoom over to a water feature as part of a bike/walkway along a very busy motor corridor. They get off and enjoyed the refreshing spurts of water that soaked their clothes and their smiles were evident from hundreds of feet away. It’s moments like those that remind me it’s important work beyond the wrench. If you’d like to support LSA please check them out at livingstreetsalliance.org

Junk Queen

I spent the other night meandering around with my partner searching brush and bulky piles. What’s brush and bulky you ask? Brush and bulky is Tucson’s bi-anual project where you can put out big piles at the curb in an effort to help people clean out junk piles for yards.

A favorite activity of mine is checking the calendar and riding around the neighborhoods when it’s time and checking out the piles for treasures. You never know what you’ll find, whether it be cool vintage furniture, some tools or great cuttings to add some more cactus to your yard.

You’ve gotta be quick, because there’s professional resales and scrappers that do the same. My partner works as an early childhood educator and is always looking for materials to work with the kids. Here she is after she scored 4 really cool lampshades that the kids will watercolor on and when lit up or hung will look beautiful!
