How much should we really care about preseason grades?
Scott Mitchell put it in a way only a former NFL quarterback can:
When he was Dan Marino’s backup, preseason was his Super Bowl.
Why? Because those reps were everything. Backup quarterbacks don’t get many real opportunities to play, so preseason is where they get a chance to show what they can do and prove they can be trusted if their number gets called.
Herman Moore sees another problem with putting too much weight on the grades: we don’t know everything that went into the performance.
Who was on the field? What was the play call? What was the situation? Was the quarterback working with players he normally practices with? What was the coaching staff actually trying to evaluate?
So yes, we can grade the performance.
But is the grade itself really a big deal?
