Also, keep an eye out for all the pelicans on the water today! ๐Ÿฆค

Fun Fact: Unlike Brown Pelicans that dive from the air, American White Pelicans hunt as a team on the surface, swimming together to herd fish into shallow water before scooping them up! ๐ŸŒŠโœจ

What happens when you turn on the lights after dark? ๐Ÿ”ฆ๐Ÿฆ‹

You might be surprised by the incredible variety of insects that appear!

Two stations were set up for the eveningโ€”one with a mercury v***r light and one with a black light. Mercury v***r (MV) lights are used because they combine intense ultraviolet (UV) emissions with broad-spectrum light, attracting a fascinating array of nighttime insects. White sheets provided a visible place for the insects to land, making it easier to observe and identify them.

Our presenters was able to identify many common species, while also sharing how the Mile High Bug Club has been documenting nighttime insects for many years. Their ongoing efforts have even contributed to the identification of multiple new species!

One highlight of the evening was the Darker Spotted Straw Moth. Its unusual coloring made it stand out from the crowd and raised the possibility that it could represent a subspecies. What an exciting find!

We are so happy to have hosted the Mile High Bug Club and look forward to more Moth Nights and opportunities to discover the amazing world of nighttime insects in the future!
