⚾️ LET’S RE-INTRODUCE YOU TO COACH DERRICK!
Our most sought-after head coach deserves a proper introduction! If you’re new to Clutch Sports Academy—or just need a reminder of who’s behind the training—here’s a little more about the man our athletes know as Coach Derrick!
📍 A Toledo, Ohio native, Coach Derrick played baseball at Start High School, where he was a member of the 2000 State Championship team! If you’re a longtime local baseball fan, you probably remember—or at least heard about—the incredible talent that came out of that team.
From there, Derrick continued his baseball career at Eastern Michigan University, where he played Division I baseball for four years. He pitched, played third base, and still holds the EMU record for most RBIs in a single season and for a career, as well as 2nd all time in home runs, doubles, runs scored, walks, and 3rd all time in hits! During his time with the Eagles, he helped lead the team to a MAC Championship.
His remarkable collegiate career earned him the opportunity to take the next step—Derrick was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 2004, beginning his professional baseball career. ⚾️
Unfortunately, an unforeseen shoulder injury brought his playing career to an early end. But it never ended his love for the game.
For the past 16 years, Coach Derrick has poured his knowledge, experience, and passion into coaching and private training. His approach goes far beyond simply teaching athletes how to hit or throw. He focuses heavily on:
⚾️ Proper mechanics and injury prevention
⚾️ Strong fundamentals and understanding of the game
⚾️ Developing confidence and consistency
⚾️ Understanding the mental side of baseball and softball
⚾️ Helping athletes become better players AND better competitors
And when he’s not at Clutch training athletes, you can find him serving his community as Lieutenant Peterson with the Toledo Fire Department, where he works as a firefighter and paramedic. 🚒
But of all his accomplishments, Coach Derrick’s most important titles are husband and dad. He’s been married to his wife, Trista, for 21 years and is the proud father of their two beautiful daughters. ❤️
Coach Derrick does wear a LOT of hats—and he wears every one of them with pride, passion, and purpose.
