Isn't this heat great? No? Yeah, we are not too fond of it either. You may have noticed that your lawn may not be growing too well right now and may be losing some of its darker green color ( mainly in non shaded areas) . It is normal for cool season lawns to start to go dormant in the heat. There are a couple of things that you can do. One, is to not worry too much about it, add a little extra water and know that once it cools down a bit, it will recover. Or, you can do extra watering to help keep it cool (generally your lawn may need water at least every other day and some lawn areas in full sun all day may need water every day right now to keep them from browning and going dormant). We are doing what we can for our customers, including skipping mowing when there would be no benefit to mowing and more benefit to staying off it. If you see that we have skipped, don't worry, we just don't want to cause any harm to your lawn and will be checking back the next week.
You may also notice that the edges may be getting "crispy" this is because it is much hotter along sidewalks, fences and edging strips (especially south facing areas). Again, The only thing to help these areas is to make sure that your sprinklers are getting to the edges.
and, if possible, do a bit if extra hand watering along the edges to help keep them hydrated. If you need any help adjusting for time or coverage, please call us ahead of your lawn care day and we can check those for you and make any adjustments that may be needed while we are there.

Lawn care tips with our dry and windy spring:

With our dryness and the wind , you may want to fire up your sprinkler system early (at your own risk) or (and we encourage and recommend you to) drag the hose out to water your lawn. while your lawn can go without water for up to a month or so usually before affecting the crown and roots in most cases, the more wind we are getting the more that window shrinks as the wind just sucks the moisture out of everything. The drier your lawn gets, the more recovery time needed to heal and bring out of dormancy.
Here are some things to keep in mind:

The lack of water will force the grass to go or stay dormant (brown color). Although it might not look good, the crown and roots will (in most cases ) remain alive and the leaves will (except for in severe drought and wind conditions) green up when water returns to the lawn. That being said , spring and fall is the best times of the year to promote growth and healing from damage caused by our harsh summers/ winters /foot traffic/pests/pets etc. So now is the best time to to help your lawn recover,but to do that we need your help. We need you to water! Getting out the hose and watering your lawn at least a couple days a week is ideal. Start with watering the areas that look the driest first and give them a good soaking if possible before moving to the rest of your lawn and giving it all a good drink.
Also - have you noticed some of your neighbors already have green lawns and you are envious ? Guess what - they are watering and yours could easily look like this as well! Its really simple -other than the things we are already doing for your lawn, Water is the key and the missing element. Please help us help your lawn by additional watering when possible.

As we approach another winter and people are blowing out their sprinklers it's a good time to remind you that trees need water in the winter. It's a lot less, but they need it. If we go a month without a decent rain or snow (6+ inches) than you need to drag the hoses to your trees on a warmer day and get some water in them. Too many people lose trees during the winter from a lack of moisture.
