👟🎨 The Art of the Run is coming to life!

In celebration of the 2026 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, six local and regional artists have been selected to transform 5-foot by 8-foot running shoe sculptures into one-of-a-kind works of public art celebrating Terre Haute’s cross country legacy.

The participating artists are:

🎨 Becky Hochhalter
🎨 Jim Shepard
🎨 Hope Wible

The sculptures will be completed in time for the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on November 21 and displayed throughout the community. One shoe will be permanently installed at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, while another will be displayed at Indianapolis International Airport leading up to the championship.

We can’t wait to see these shoes come to life and celebrate Cross Country Town USA! 👟

Karen Dyer and Kelly Walker took a trip out to the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course to get a look at one of the newest additions coming to the course!

An oversized fire pit is currently in the works, giving runners, families, and visitors a new place to gather and enjoy the course. It should be finished soon, and while it may be a little too hot to gather around the fire right now, we have a feeling it’ll be a popular spot once those cooler cross-country days arrive. And for the athletes, you can’t go wrong with roasting a few marshmallows after a day at the course! 😉

We’re excited to see another great addition coming to one of Terre Haute’s premier sports destinations!

We’re excited to announce a new role for a familiar face at the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau! 🎉

Ethan Salsbury has moved into the role of Events & Operations Coordinator, helping the THCVB strengthen the events, partnerships and visitor experiences that bring people to Terre Haute and Vigo County.

Ethan has been with the THCVB since 2025 and is a 2025 graduate of Indiana State University. In his new role, he’ll work closely with event organizers, venues and community partners, including Downtown Terre Haute, local festivals and other organizations, to coordinate event logistics, support major sporting events and championships, and help create great experiences for our visitors.

Ethan is also a 2026 cohort member of Connect IN West Central Indiana, a Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce and West Central Indiana Partnership program focused on building community connections, civic engagement and professional networks throughout the region.

You’ll see Ethan out and about throughout the community, working behind the scenes at events, connecting with our partners and helping showcase all that’s happening in Terre Haute.

As the THCVB continues to grow from destination marketing into a broader destination management role, Ethan will be an important part of turning plans and partnerships into great experiences for our visitors and community.

836 athletes. More than 2,000 spectators. One great day of cross country in Terre Haute. 👟

The Terre Haute North State Preview brought high school & middle school runners, coaches, families and fans to the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course for a full day of racing.

One of our favorite traditions at LaVern Gibson is the shoe tree, where runners leave behind their shoes at the end of a season or their cross country career. Every pair tells a story.
