At Yamash*ta Martial Arts, we offer a unique blend of the traditional arts, consisting of “Okinawan Shōrin-ryū Karate-do" (Karate) and "Matayoshi Kobudo" (weapons). We also offer the modern, and very intense, style of martial arts known as
"Suikendo," created by Grandmaster Hanshi Tadashi Yamash*ta (10th degree black belt). These arts are taught at the dojo through 4th degree Shihan Kelly Tovey and 2nd degree Sensei Tim Roach.

One minute the mats are empty and the dojo is quiet. Then class starts and suddenly it’s filled with students training, learning, laughing, working hard, and becoming a little more confident with every class.
Watching our karate dojo go from an empty training space to a room full of students will never get old.
We’re so grateful for every student and family who helps bring this space to life. 🥋

How students look before karate class ➡️ after karate class and then there’s the sensei who caused it 😂🥋
We enter the mat with focused faces, stretch, and ready to go. We leave the mat sweaty, sore, and tired (some of us still smiling though!). That’s what a good martial arts class will do. As our senseis always say work hard, have fun!
The real question is are they ready to do it all again next class? 😅

Congratulations to our karate competitors! They took to the floor at the annual Nikkei Games Karate Tournament in Long Beach.
Sensei Neil and students Eric, Regina, and Brie brought their A game and it showed. It’s never easy going out there but our passion for karate is what drives us. Keep showing up, giving your best, supporting your teammates, and walking away a stronger martial artist than you were before. 🏅
Sensei Neil placed 1st in kata and 3rd in weapons. Congrats to Brie on 2nd in kata. Eric received 3rd in kata and 2nd in kumite and Regina walked away with 2nd and 1st place medals in kata and kumite 🤜

Every student who steps onto the mat is working toward something different. It can be their confidence, better focus, stronger technique, self discipline, or simply getting some exercise.
That’s what we love about Yamash*ta. Whether you’re stepping into our dojo for the first time or you’ve been training for years, there’s always something new to learn and another opportunity to grow with some of the friendliest people cheering you on.
We train together. We encourage each other. And we keep showing up. 👊🥋

Sensei Kelly won gold in all 3 of her divisions and Sensei Neil made it to the top 6 in both short and long weapon divisions.
