At Shinobi School we firmly believe that athletic skill, combined with courage and altruism, will help our students make themselves and the world around them a better place to live in. The conversation around risky play is shifting — from "as safe as possible" to "as safe as necessary."

Here's where APK has always stood:

You can't learn risk management without "Risk" and "Management."

Risk has to be present, and the participant has to have the agency to navigate it. Add risk without the navigation and you've created a hazard. Remove the risk and you've removed the lesson.

You cannot teach someone to make good decisions by removing the obstacles.

Parkour teaches and enforces reliance on the practitioner, not the environment, for safety. That's a different conversation than the one most playgrounds are designed around.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗜𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘆: 𝗜𝘁 𝗛𝗮𝘀 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗩𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗧𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲

Surely you have noticed that kids can stay locked into a video game for hours. Game designers spend billions making sure of that - dialing in difficulty, flow, feedback loops... all to keep you playing.

Here’s the thing:
𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹.
In our programs, students hit that same sweet spot where challenge meets skill. They’re focused. They’re pushing themselves. And they want to keep going.
That’s the flow state. And we don’t need fancy graphics to get there, just the right obstacle, the right cue, and the space to try something a little bit scary (but totally safe).
It’s not just engagement. It’s 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭.
The kind that sticks. The kind they remember.
We see it every time a kid lands their first precision jump. Or balances across a rail for the first time. There’s a look: surprise, pride, and “can I do it again?”
That’s why 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝘂𝗻 - 𝙞𝙩’𝙨 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙮.
Students want to come back. They want to get better. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱.

If you're thinking about how to make PE more engaging, ask yourself:
"What happens when students get to choose their own challenge — and succeed?"
