This week in Yoga Teacher Training, we explored what happens when we create a little more space both in the body and in ourselves.
🧡 The Sacral Chakra: Svadhisthana
Our chakra study brought us to the Sacral Chakra, located in the lower abdomen and associated with creativity, emotion, pleasure, connection, and flow.
Svadhisthana invites us to consider our relationship with change. Rather than holding tightly to how things “should” be, we explored the idea of becoming more comfortable with movement, creativity, and adaptability.
For a yoga teacher, this can show up in so many ways: how we create a sequence, how we respond to the energy of the room, how we connect with students, and how willing we are to let our teaching evolve.
🌀 Twists
On the physical side of our training, we spent time breaking down twists. We looked beyond simply “turning farther” and focused instead on creating length first, understanding where rotation is coming from, using the breath, and offering variations for different bodies. Twists are also wonderful teachers. They remind us that sometimes we need to create space before we can move more deeply.
🔗 Binds
We also explored binds, and how to approach them safely, how to teach them clearly, and, importantly, how to recognize when a bind isn’t appropriate for a particular student or body.
A bind isn’t the goal of a pose. It is simply one possible expression of it. As teachers, our responsibility isn’t to get every student into the deepest-looking version of a posture. It’s to help students understand what they are doing, why they are doing it, and how to find an expression that works for their own body.
The thread connecting everything this week?
Create space. Stay curious. Allow movement. Don’t force. That applies beautifully to twists and binds, and perhaps to life as well. Another wonderful week of learning, practicing, questioning, and growing together at Yoga Loft Tampa. 🧡
