Two months into my return to competitive e-cycling, today I saw another step forward.
This was nearly two hours of racing over 34 miles with more than 3,500 feet of climbing. The attacks came repeatedly. Gaps opened on the climbs, and instead of panicking or burning every match, I stayed committed to the system:
Presence. Precision. Patience. Fuel.
I raced near the front, closed gaps repeatedly, protected my energy and arrived at the final long mountain ready to ride my own sustainable pace. Even when the strongest riders accelerated away, I kept pushing all the way to the summit.
The numbers tell part of the story: 276W average power, 104 RPM average cadence, 151 BPM average heart rate, and my strongest recorded one-hour power performance yet.
But the biggest victory wasn't a number or finishing position.
I finished strong.

A training system isn't only about repeating hard workouts week after week. It's about giving each training day its proper purpose. Recovery days allow adaptation. Hard days create stimulus. Endurance days build durability. And pre-race activation prepares the athlete to compete without spending tomorrow's energy today.
We've repeated this process consistently, and that consistency is teaching the body something important: when it's time to work, work; when it's time to recover, recover; and when it's time to race, be ready.

Sweet Spot + VO₂ Cycling Workout | Building Power, Cadence & Efficiency One Ride at a Time
Today’s Friday Sweet Spot + VO₂ workout is another step in building a stronger, more efficient cyclist.
At this stage of training, the goal isn’t simply to push more watts. We’re teaching the body to produce power while maintaining cadence, controlling torque, managing breathing, and staying technically efficient as the intensity increases.
The Sweet Spot work develops sustainable power and muscular endurance. The VO₂ efforts challenge the cardiovascular system and teach the legs to respond when the intensity rises. But the real progress comes from how we execute the work: controlled, present, and without wasting energy.
As the weeks continue, we’re seeing the same structured sessions become more manageable. Cadence feels increasingly natural, the transition into harder efforts becomes smoother, and we’re learning how to apply torque without destroying the rhythm of the pedal stroke.
That is one of the biggest lessons structured cycling training can teach:
Don’t chase the numbers. Build the system that produces the numbers.

You don’t become a stronger cyclist in one workout. You become stronger by improving 1% at a time.
Today’s structured cycling session was another opportunity to execute—not chase numbers.
We focused on the relationship between cadence, torque, power, breathing, and controlled ex*****on. As the weeks continue, we are seeing the work become more natural: the legs respond better, cadence becomes smoother, power becomes more controlled, and the body learns how to handle the workload with greater efficiency.
That is what structured training is supposed to do.
The lesson from today is simple:
Cadence leads. Torque follows. Power is the result. And when everything works together, the cyclist floats.
Instead of fighting the pedals, we teach the body to create rhythm first. Then we apply the right amount of torque when the situation demands it. Breathing helps us stay controlled, while consistency allows the adaptations to accumulate week after week.
For any cyclist following structured indoor cycling training, the goal shouldn't be to destroy yourself every day. The goal is to execute each session with purpose, recover, adapt, and return a little stronger.
1% better today. Another 1% tomorrow.
Over weeks and months, those small improvements can become a completely different cyclist.

Hill Repeats 2.0: Cadence, Torque & Power | How Cyclists Build Strength Without Chasing More Watts
Today’s Wednesday Hill Repeats 2.0 was not about chasing bigger numbers. It was about learning how to produce useful force while respecting cadence, breathing, recovery, and the purpose of every interval.
The session: 1:25:07 of structured work, 2,518 ft of climbing, 181 W average power, 112 rpm average cadence, 127 rpm maximum cadence, and 13/13 intervals completed.
During the main climbing blocks, power remained around 224–225 W while cadence stayed approximately 116–120 rpm. This demonstrates an important relationship in cycling:
Power = Torque × Angular Velocity
At approximately 118 rpm and 225 W, the average crank torque is around 18 N·m. Instead of producing those watts by grinding a heavy gear at low cadence, the goal is to apply useful torque while maintaining high rotational speed.
That is what we mean at Chavez Cycling when we say:
Cadence commands. Torque obeys. Power is the result of the relationship between the two — and the cyclist floats.
Hill repeats can help develop muscular endurance, pedaling coordination, aerobic efficiency, climbing strength, and the ability to repeatedly produce controlled power without destroying the legs.
The recovery periods matter too. We don't attack the recovery. We use it to regain control of breathing and prepare the body to execute the next block with the same precision.
And there is another lesson behind this workout:
I’m not looking for my workouts to become harder. I’m looking to become stronger by consistently executing the workouts I already have.
More watts are not automatically better training. The correct watts, cadence, torque, recovery and repetition — performed consistently — create adaptation.
Train the movement.

Respect the recovery.

But here's the question most cyclists never ask:
How are you creating those 225 watts?
225 watts at 70 RPM and 225 watts at 110 RPM may show the same power number — but your legs are producing that power very differently.
⚙️ Cadence tells us how fast the pedals are turning.
💪 Torque tells us how much rotational force we're applying.
⚡ Power is created by the relationship between the two.
And here's where cycling gets interesting:
As cadence increases at the same power, the average torque required per revolution decreases.
As cadence decreases, more torque is required to maintain those same watts.
That's why understanding watts isn't enough.
A cyclist should understand how those watts are being created.

6th Place, New Personal Bests: What Two Months of Racing Has Taught Me | USA Cycling Semi-Final Qualifier
This race was about much more than a finishing position.
I raced the 2026 USA Cycling Semi-Final Qualifier, a qualifier on the road toward the World Championship. Around 12 riders were expected, but only six started—and I finished 6th.
From the first kilometer, the race exploded. The attacks started immediately, the group broke apart, and I found myself chasing. I caught one rider, kept fighting, and from that point forward there was almost no hiding and very little recovery.
But I never stopped pedaling.
I never stopped breathing.
And I never stopped trusting the cadence.
For 55+ minutes, I stayed committed to the system we have been building: cadence, controlled torque, breathing, patience and presence.
The result was something bigger than the finishing position:
⚡ 738 W — 5-second power: NEW PERSONAL BEST (+13.7%)
⚡ 8.2 W/kg — 5-second power: +17.5%
🔥 491 W — 1-minute power: NEW PERSONAL BEST (+1.7%)
🔥 5.46 W/kg — 1-minute power: +2.8%

We have only been racing for about two months, and the numbers are already showing progress.
There is still a lot to learn and a lot of work ahead. That's exactly why these races matter. Every race is another classroom. Every chase teaches something. Every mistake gives us information. Every personal best shows that adaptation is taking place.
Today wasn't about pretending that 6th place was a victory.
It was about discovering that the cyclist who finished 6th today is stronger than the cyclist who started this journey two months ago.
We keep training.
We keep learning.
We keep building.
