Body composition refers to the proportion of lean tissue to body-fat tissue. Lean body mass is composed of muscles, connective tissue, bones, blood, nervous tissue, skin, and organs. Lean mass is a metabolically active tissue which allows the body to perform work. However you need a certain amount of body fat for insulation and thermoregulation, hormone production, cushioning of vital organs, and maintenance of certain body functions. For men essential body fat is between 2-5% and women 10-13%. The remainder of body fat is stored throughout the body in adipose tissue, subcutaneously or viscerally, acting as a readily available source of energy to cushion and protect vital organs.

Success isn’t always measured by the weight on the bar.

Sometimes it’s measured by a two-foot dog gate.

A client recently sent me this message after stepping over her dog gate for the first time.

She told me she never would have even attempted it before because her balance and leg strength had declined, and she’d tripped trying to step over it in the past.

For months, we’ve focused on building stronger legs, improving core stability, and challenging her balance in a safe, progressive way.

This week, she confidently stepped over the gate.

To some people, that might seem like a small accomplishment.

To her, it meant confidence.
It meant independence.
It meant realizing that her body is capable of more than she thought.

These are the victories that remind me why I love what I do.

Fitness isn’t just about looking better.
It’s about making everyday life easier, safer, and more enjoyable.

Everyday wins are worth celebrating.

When my client came to me she had undergone two knee replacements and an ankle replacement. She needed to rebuild strength and muscle mass and was getting ready for some pretty big hikes that were about 6-8 months away. She was feeling nervous about this hike, but with her consistent effort ( 3 days a week of training with little to no missed sessions) we were able to accomplish just that. This is the type of feedback I live for. There is so much more to fitness than how your body looks. Sure looking good is nice, but feeling good and being healthy is even better. Having a body that has the strength and endurance to give you quality of life and independence is king. It doesn’t take much to get the body to respond. After all that is what it is designed to do.

Freeland Fitness offers 4 distinct classes. 3 at the gym and one on Davis islands at Seaplane Basin Park.

What makes my small group HIIT class different from others is the size of the class. With only 2-4 people per class you get a bootcamp style high intensity workout without losing attention to your form and to you. It does include a warm up and cool down to reduce risk for injury without reducing the intensity of the workout.

My other classes are a senior class which focuses on fun, balance, strength, and brain training keeping you feeling and functioning your best.

Lastly the beginner strength training class is a morning class on Tuesday and Fridays designed for people new to strength training. I’d love to have some people in my classes, so don’t hesitate to sign up or reach out.

Arnold Schwarzenegger explained that the body eventually “hits a wall,” meaning it adapts to your routine. When that happens, doing the same exercises in the same order stops working.
To break through, he suggested shocking the body. Instead of starting light, go heavy—like beginning chest with 315 for high reps, then stripping plates and continuing. This forces the pec muscles to adapt to something completely new.
