One thing we regularly see in training is how quickly attention can shrink under pressure.
Someone becomes focused on the person directly in front of them and suddenly stops noticing everything else. The open doorway disappears from their awareness. They back toward a wall or obstacle. They fail to notice another person moving nearby.
The immediate threat matters, but it is rarely the only thing that matters.
At Maryland Systema, we work on keeping a broader picture while dealing with pressure. Where are you moving? What is behind you? Who else is nearby? Is there an easier way out?
Sometimes the best response has very little to do with overcoming the person in front of you. Changing your position or leaving in another direction can solve a much bigger problem.
See the threat, but keep seeing the room.
