In a 420, you learn pretty quickly that sailing fast isn’t just about what you do. It’s about communicating, anticipating, and trusting the person beside you.

And when it all comes together? That’s a pretty great feeling.

A little more wind. A little more boat speed. A little more challenge.

And suddenly all those hours learning what to do start looking like this.

Confidence isn’t always quiet. Sometimes it’s two kids hiking out of a 420 and absolutely sending it across Lake Tahoe. 😏

Sometimes the first sailing lesson is also a lesson in patience. 😂⛵️

A mom and her 7-year-old daughter joined us for a lesson on Lake Tahoe… and initially, Tahoe gave us absolutely nothing to work with.

So we waited. We learned the boat. We talked about the wind we wished we had. And floated around on a ridiculously beautiful lake.

And then the breeze arrived.

The sails filled, the boat came alive, and suddenly this was sailing.

There’s something pretty great about getting to watch a kid experience that for the first time — especially with her mom right beside her.

Some things are worth waiting for. 💙

Day 3: Let’s make sailing slightly more complicated. 😂⛵️

Learning to fly a spinnaker means a whole new set of things to think about — halyards, sheets, timing, communication… all while someone still has to actually sail the boat.

But this is how you learn. One new skill at a time, with a coach talking you through it until eventually, you don’t need the coach anymore.

That’s the good stuff.

It teaches you to make decisions when things are moving fast. To pay attention. To trust yourself. To work with other people. To get comfortable being uncomfortable.

Sometimes you get it right. Sometimes you capsize.

And then you figure out how to right the boat and keep going.

That might be our favorite part.

Whether you’re 12 or 52, learning to sail builds confidence, independence, problem-solving and grit — not because someone tells you that you can do hard things, but because you get out there and prove it to yourself.

We’re pretty lucky to have Lake Tahoe as our classroom. 💙

They asked for a sunset charter.

They did not necessarily ask to go sailing on a race boat. 😂

But somewhere between the breeze filling in, Lake Tahoe showing off, and an impromptu performance of Shoop, they decided they were VERY into it.

Not exactly the sunset cruise they were expecting. Possibly better. ⛵️

Our adult Learn to Sail classes get you out of the classroom and onto the water — learning by actually sailing.

And yes, grown-ups are absolutely allowed to spend an afternoon ripping around Lake Tahoe in little boats. We highly recommend it. 😏⛵️
