SHORT STOP TEEN LOUNGE IS OPEN AT SWANTON REC

We’re excited to bring back a space where teens can hang out, relax, connect with friends, and have some fun after school!

Location: Swanton Recreation
Days: Tuesdays • Thursdays • Fridays
Time: 3:00–5:00 PM

Whether you’ve joined us before or this is your first time, there’s a place for you at the Short Stop Teen Lounge!

No pressure. No plans required. Just come hang out!

Put Down the Phone. Show Up.

Community is something you have to show up for.
Show up at the game.
Show up at the community event.
Show up at the volunteer project.
Show up at the meeting.
Show up for your neighbor.
Show up when someone needs help.
Show up when something needs fixing.
You don't have to be an elected official.
You don't have to run an organization.
You don't have to be an expert.
Sometimes civic engagement is simply:
"I'm here. How can I help?"
That's how communities get things done.

The Car Ride Home: Make It a No-Pressure Zone.

Here's a mindfulness challenge for sports parents:
The first five minutes of the car ride home belong to your child.
No analysis.
No coaching.
No critique.
No replaying every mistake.
Try:
"How are you feeling?"
"Want to talk about the game?"
"Want some music?"
Or simply:
"I'm glad I got to watch you."
Sometimes silence is okay, too.
Young athletes can experience sports-related pressure and stress, particularly when expectations become focused on performance.
Your car can become the place where your child knows:
I don't have to perform here.
I don't have to impress anyone here.
I can just be me.
That's mindfulness.
That's connection.
That's parenting.

Become Part of the Team—Not Just the Sideline

Youth sports don't happen by magic.
Fields need lining.
Equipment needs organizing.
Teams need snacks.
Games need volunteers.
Coaches need support.
Programs need people willing to help.
And parents are an incredibly important part of that community.
The National Academy of Athletics points out that youth sports depend heavily on volunteers and encourages parents to find meaningful ways to contribute—not just as coaches, but through committees, administration, events, and other roles.
You don't have to coach.
Maybe you can:
📋 Help organize.
🍎 Bring snacks.
🧹 Help clean up.
📸 Take photos.
🚗 Help with transportation.
🙋 Volunteer at an event.
Every little contribution matters.
Your child's team can become your community, too.
