I always like to promote others in youth sports and top notch coaches/instructors. Especially when they have an impeccable track record and testimonials to prove it.... For GK Coaches.....
If you don't get to know the person, you will have a hard time fully developing the goalkeeper.
GK Coaches can do this by the questions they ask during sessions, by body language, effort, attitude, how they respond to errors, during a water break, questions after the session, questions before the session, without mom or dad interference. Over a period of 3-4 sessions, you should have a good understanding of what the goals of the goalkeeper are and you can see if it matches up with their effort, attitude, energy.
GK Coaches..... do you know what the goal for the goalkeeper is? Not what the parent wants for the goalkeeper but what the goalkeeper says they want? Or do you program sessions based on what YOU want for the goalkeeper? Not all goalkeepers want to play college. Not all goalkeepers want to go pro. But they do want to get better when they compete. And those that say they want to play in college/pro...... is there attitude, effort and invisible training in congruent with what they are saying? Because your 1x a week training isn't going to cut it without an IDP that includes the "invisible training". Sad truth. In the pros when a goalkeeper gets scored on 3 or 4 goals, they talk about how terrible the goalkeeper was. Nothing about the 3 vs 1, nothing about defenders missing assignments, nothing about the striker that lost control of the ball in front of a goal.scoring opportunity. The announcers on tv, the posts on social media. Now, if the goalkeeper made a positional error or technical error, its a different conversation. Just like i dont think clean sheets tell.the story, goals against also doesnt always tell the full.story.
