Yesterday we wrapped up an incredible session with Part 3 of our PSD Club Event series on Underwater Photography: Editing Basics! 🌊📷🤿💻🎉

A massive thank you to our coordinator Audrey, and to our guest speaker Matthew from ICOSA Expeditions for breaking down the art of underwater filmmaking and post-production. Whether you are shooting on a or a , Matthew shared excellent techniques for transforming raw clips into compelling stories, including a live look at his workflow.

Here are a few game-changing takeaways from the workshop:

① Keep it Steady: Stability is the most critical element in underwater filming. Use a camera tray, and practice momentary, controlled breath-holds to avoid shaky footage.

② Dial in Your Settings: Always aim to shoot video in 4K at 60fps so you have the flexibility to slow your footage down smoothly in post-production.

③ Master the Color Grade: For that perfect underwater look, lower the midtones, raise the highlights, and add red back into your shadows to compensate for depth.

④ Approach with Care: Anticipate a marine animal’s path and position yourself ahead of it rather than swimming directly at them.

Are great white sharks moving closer to our favorite local dive sites? 🦈🌊🤔

July is Shark Month at PSD (in honor of Shark Week, 7/6–7/13)! To celebrate, we’re exploring how shifting ocean temperatures might be changing where these iconic apex predators call home.

Join us for an eye-opening presentation by Anthony McGinnis Jr., a researcher from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. He’ll be breaking down his latest findings on how a warming ocean is driving juvenile white sharks toward emerging nursery zones right here in Monterey Bay. Using drone footage, acoustic telemetry, and environmental data, Anthony will share a fascinating look into the future of our local waters.
