SCC Women’s ALOT A Team Off to a Strong Start

The SCC Women’s ALOT A team is off to an exciting start this season, posting an impressive 4–1 record. Following a decisive 5–0 sweep on September 16, the team moved into the top spot in the standings by just one point.

The competition is close, with both Apollo Beach and West Meadows also sporting 4–1 records. With the teams so tightly matched, every point matters and each match can make a difference in the standings.

The league features eight teams in each division, with two 14-week seasons played each year. For the SCC women, the strong start has created plenty of excitement—and plenty of motivation to keep the momentum going as the season continues.

If you have ever thought about trying competitive tennis, come out and watch the action. Stop by the courts on a Wednesday morning at 9:00 when either the A or C team will be playing. It is a great way to see league tennis, meet the players and get a feel for the competition.

SCC also offers USTA leagues on different days, giving tennis players even more opportunities to compete and meet fellow tennis enthusiasts. With tennis available for every level up through 4.0, there is a place for players with a wide range of skills and experience.

So dust off your racket, find your tennis shoes and come join the fun. There’s a team waiting for you at SCC!

SCC Men Open Fall Season Against Cheval

The Sun City Center men's USTA tennis team kicked off their 2026 Fall Season on Saturday, September 12th, hosting Cheval at the home courts in the Fall Season18 & Over 3.5 league.

Kevin Johnson set the tone for the morning with a dominant singles win, 6-1, 6-2, picking up the team's lone victory of the day.

Mike Mazzucco brought the fight at singles, falling 7-5, 6-4 in a match that stayed competitive from start to finish.

In doubles, Mark Nelson and Qin Yang went toe-to-toe with Cheval, dropping a close 6-4, 6-4 match. Henry Gales and Randy McPhee matched that same competitive energy, also falling 6-4, 6-4. Michael Nugent and Brian Gray rounded out the day with a hard-fought effort, falling 6-2, 6-4.

While the team came up short in four of five matches, every line showed real fight against a strong Cheval squad, and there's plenty to build on as the new season gets underway. The team hits the road for the next three weeks before returning home on Saturday, October 10th — mark your calendars and come out to cheer them on!

Another Strong Showing for SCC Men’s Tennis

The Sun City Center USTA men’s competitive doubles team hosted the second HCC team on Saturday, August 22nd for their 8th match of the summer season. Despite the blistering sun and the fact that they are still playing up a level and in an 18 & Over league, our men held their own and pushed two of the three matches to a tiebreak.

Mark Nelson and Kevin Johnson battled HCC’s top team in a highly competitive match. After dropping the first set 3/6, Nelson and Johnson came roaring back to take the second set 6/3, only to fall in tight tiebreaker for the match.

The big winners of the day were Joe Norton and Michael Nugent, who came out hard and took the first set decidedly against two young players. But their opponents rallied to take the second set and push the match to a nail-biting tiebreaker. “When it hit 9-8, we absolutely were not going to lose the next point,” Norton said. And he was right.

The depth of the HCC bench was on display in line three where Terry Payton and Henry Gales took on a pairing that could have played in the first line. Payton and Gales stayed in it to the end and gave them a run for their money intimately falling in two.

The SCC men will conclude their summer season with an away match at Davis Island next week. Recruiting for the Fall season, which will begin in mid-September, is underway. Interested players are encouraged to reach out to Kevin Johnson at [email protected].

SCC Men Come in Hot Against Davis Island

The Sun City Center men’s USTA competitive doubles team hosted one of two teams from Davis Island on Saturday, August 15th in the seventh match of the summer season. Our men continue to keep these matches highly competitive despite the fact that they are playing up a level and in an 18 & Over league. Not even the heat and humidity could stop them.

In a match that lasted nearly three hours, Kevin Johnson and Qin Yang pushed Davis Island’s top team to a tiebreaker. After dropping the first set 5/7, they stayed in it and took the second set 7/5, only to fall in a tight tiebreaker for the match.

Mark Nelson and Mike Mazzucco also held their own through painfully long rallies against two young guys and gave them a close run in the first set before dropping the second. “I like that these guys don’t hold back at all with us, and I love that we are stepping up and showing them that we are real competition,” said Nelson.

And the fans are loving it, too. Despite the heat, fans filled the bleachers and filled the air with gasps and cheers. Supporter Burtie McPhee, who stuck it out and cheered to the end, commented that the match really was so much closer than the score showed: “I thought that was something they just said in the paper, but it’s true.” It’s also clear that the opposing teams are impressed, and maybe a little intimidated, to see our sense of community on display when so many SCC residents show up for the team.

The men will continue their season with one more home match on Saturday the 22nd and invite everyone to come out and cheer them on. The last match of their season is away on the 29th, and we will be sure to tell you all about it here.

SCC Men Battle Cheval at Home

The Sun City Center men’s USTA competitive doubles team hosted Cheval on Saturday, August 8th for the sixth match of their summer season. Despite playing up a level and in an 18 & Over league, the SCC men continued to hold their own and put on a show.

After dropping a close first set to Cheval’s top team, Kevin Johnson and Mike Mazzucco came roaring back to a 5-0 lead in the second set, only to fall in a tight tiebreaker.

Joe Norton and Michael Nugent faced off with two young, tall guys yet again, but they went toe-to-toe and pushed multiple games to deuce.

The match of the day was won by Brian Gray and Qin Yang, who took control from the start and shut their opponents down in a decisive 6-2, 6-3 victory. Gray credited their disciplined, patient approach.

“We played high IQ tennis,” Gray said. “We took a lot of risks, but we took them when we were up 40-love, not when it was 30-30.”

The men will continue their season at home for the next two weeks and invite everyone to come out and cheer them on. The USTA Fall leagues are now organizing, and teams will play both singles and doubles matches starting in mid-September. 3.5 players who are interested in joining the team should reach out to anyone on the team or come back to a match and introduce themselves.
