Tech Tip Tuesday:
Some of the easiest trolling motor maintenance checks is also one of the most overlooked. Fishing line can get wrapped around the prop shaft and work its way behind the prop. Left there long enough, it can damage the shaft seal and potentially allow water into the lower unit.
Before your next trip:
✅ Remove the prop; ✅ Check for fishing line or debris; ✅ Inspect the prop for cracks, bends, chips, or excessive wear; ✅ Replace a damaged prop before it affects ; performance or causes additional damage; ✅ Check the prop shaft for excessive movement; ✅ Make sure the prop nut is secure
A damaged prop can reduce thrust, create vibration, increase battery usage, and put unnecessary strain on your trolling motor. If the prop is cracked, bent, or missing pieces, replacing it is usually the best option.
It only takes a few minutes to inspect or replace a prop and could help prevent expensive repairs.
