Good afternoon Parents and Coaches,
As we head into this weekend, I wanted to send a quick reminder regarding SEYFA's weather and lightning procedures and what everyone should expect if we experience bad weather on Saturday.
The current forecast for Saturday, September 19 calls for widespread rain across southeastern Wisconsin, with thunderstorms possible. The National Weather Service is currently forecasting a high probability of precipitation, with some areas potentially receiving significant rainfall.
At this time, this does not mean games are canceled. Weather conditions can change, and communities should plan to play as scheduled unless conditions at their location require a delay or other action.
Under Section 14 of the SEYFA Rule Book, player, coach, volunteer, official, and spectator safety is the priority during inclement weather. The rules specifically address heavy rain, thunder, lightning, excessive heat, snow, sleet, and other conditions that could impact safety.
If we experience thunderstorms or lightning Saturday, please remember:
The Field Marshal, trainer, officials, and head coaches work together regarding decisions related to player safety.
The head referee is responsible for decisions regarding field conditions and the quality/safety of play, including standing water or a field becoming too muddy to safely play.
Players will be sheltered in the locker rooms, spectators will be asked to go to their vehicles.
The general SEYFA rule is to wait 30 minutes after the last lightning sighting before play resumes.
A weather delay may last a maximum of 1 hour and 45 minutes.
If play cannot resume within that period, the SEYFA Rule Book outlines the procedures for completing or rescheduling the game.
If a makeup is required, coaches should make sure the referee's game card documents the score, time remaining, down, and other necessary game information, since the makeup game is a continuation of the original game.
The biggest thing I am asking from everyone is patience. If we have weather moving through, please allow the Field Marshals and officials to do their jobs. We may have delays, games may get pushed back, and schedules could get messy. Safety comes first!
We want to communicate this ahead of time so everyone understands that a weather delay does not automatically mean a cancellation. We will follow the SEYFA procedures and make decisions based on the current conditions. We will keep everyone updated if any cancellations do occur.
Cheerleaders will not cheer if it is raining for safety! Cheer Coaches will reach out to their teams if their scheduled times are canceled!
Hopefully Mother Nature cooperates and we get all of our games in!
