💙 Join Us This Friday: Finding Hope on the Alzheimer’s Journey 💙

Join us Friday, September 18, for an inspiring and deeply personal conversation with former Wisconsin Governor Martin J. Schreiber.

Governor Schreiber will share his journey as a caregiver for his late wife, Elaine, who lived with Alzheimer’s disease—including the challenges, lessons, and missteps he experienced along the way.

Through candid storytelling, he’ll highlight the power of compassion, humor, and understanding when supporting loved ones living with dementia and the caregivers walking alongside them.

His honesty and practical advice offer encouragement, connection, and hope for anyone navigating their own Alzheimer’s journey.

🧠 Learn. Connect. Find Support.

Join us this Friday and be reminded that no one has to climb the Alzheimer’s mountain alone.

🌟 Staff Spotlight Sunday 🌟

This week, we're highlighting Maggie Shumway, our Healthy Living Director at the Jackie & Steve Kane Program Center! We asked her a few questions so you can get to know the people who help make our Y such a special place.

What is your role at the organization, and what do you do?
I manage the Wellness Center and oversee the healthy living programming, personal trainers, and instructors. I also work as a personal trainer and instructor myself, so I have the opportunity to connect with our members in many meaningful ways.

What professional background or training supports your current work?
I am NASM certified for personal training. I taught high school and college level English, and ran both a weightlifting and strength & conditioning program for student athletes and staff.

What excites you most about your work here?
I am new to the YMCA and this position! I am inspired by both my coworkers and the members, because I see how they care for and show up for each other every day. This is an incredibly supportive and kind community, and it’s an honor to be a part of it.

Tell us a little about yourself!
I spent the last 12 years climbing mountains and doing landscape photography in Colorado, but I recently moved back to be close to family and happily traded the mountains for the lake.

Find Your Voice with YMCA Youth in Government!

Are you a student in 7th–12th grade who wants to build confidence, strengthen your public speaking skills, and make your voice heard? Youth in Government (YIG) is the program for you!

Through this hands-on civic leadership program, students learn how state government works while developing skills in leadership, writing, debate, and public speaking. Then, in March, delegates from across Wisconsin gather at the State Capitol in Madison to debate bills, elect student leaders, and experience government in action.

🗣️ Build confidence
🏛️ Learn how government works
🤝 Meet students from across Wisconsin
🌟 Develop leadership skills that last a lifetime
