Ever taken a yoga class where the teacher never leaves the front of the room?
Maybe they’re demonstrating. Maybe they’re doing the entire practice alongside everyone else. Maybe that works for some, but we think it’s hard to help people you aren’t looking at.
One of the biggest things we teach in our 200-Hour Teacher Training is how to SEE people. In fact, we think the best teachers aren’t the ones doing the fanciest poses, but rather the ones watching, moving through the room. Noticing.
A student’s body tells a story if you know how to look 👀
Maybe they need a block.
Maybe they need a different stance.
Maybe they’re one small adjustment away from feeling the pose completely differently
Maybe they need reassurance that they’re doing just fine.
In our Fall 200-Hour Teacher Training, you’ll learn far more than sequencing and anatomy. You’ll learn how to observe bodies, understand movement patterns, and teach the actual humans in front of you—not the ones in the glossy pictures from a textbook.
The result? Better teachers and better experiences for the people who trust you with their practice.

Not everyone comes to yoga for the same reason. Good thing you don’t have to 🐾
Some people come to stretch and move. Some come to breathe a little deeper. Some come to work hard, sweat, and explore. Some come because it’s the one hour of the day nobody needs anything from them. And some honestly just come to be around other people for a bit.
That’s the beauty of a neighborhood yoga studio.
Black Dog Yoga in Studio City; locally owned, community built, and managed by actual yogis. From gentle and restorative classes to spicy flows and workshops that push your edge a little, there’s space for all of it here.

The sound of laughter may have only been matched by the occasional “wait… I can actually do this?” 👀
Bolder Not Older Part 3 came to our Studio City space this weekend, with Barbara + Bonnie took their show to the mat, proving once again that the proper tools, the right cueing, and a willingness to play can open doors to poses people never thought possible.
Strong doesn’t have to mean serious. And “advanced” sometimes just means having the right tools and people around you.
Treats for the feet. Tips for the hips. Partner work. Lots of laughs. Maybe a few surprise breakthroughs. Thanks to everyone who came out to move, explore, and surprise yourselves 🐾

A little Black Dog Yoga history lesson 📚🐾
On May 2, 2002, Sigrid Matthews taught her very first class at BDY. Quite a journey from those old Sherman Oaks strip mall days. Yesterday, 24 years to the day, we surprised her with 24 flowers before class 🌸
24 years later… still here, still guiding, still doing that thing where you walk out feeling a little more like yourself.
Through every version of the studio (and there have been a few), Sigrid’s been a constant. And that’s no small thing. We’re lucky to be part of it.
Find her every Tuesday for the doubleheader: 9am Hatha and 1030a Gentle Yoga + Stretch and then on Saturdays at 10am for Yoga For Well Being. See you on the mat 🧘👀
